a few words on the mumbai rains
by pradnya gadkari on Aug 04, 2005 08:29 PM  Permalink

i am a mumbaikar living in New York right now.. past whole week i have been reading about the devastation caused by the torrential rains in mumbai on 26th July. i have been going through people's comments & their experiences during that period.. though im NY i could empathise with people in mumbai coz i have faced the problems caused by heavy rains till last year.. just a afterthought on all this, firstly i would like to mention that our weather bureau needs to be more efficient in forecasting.. i agree that weather is unpredictable, but i think updating our system is not impossible. a more accurate forecast would have cautioned people & saved human lives.. also i feel that our disaster management team needs to be more efficient, & to help them our civic authority should take necessary steps before the monsoon begins like cleaning the sewages, & improving the roads.. i lived in the western suburbs & over the past 2 years i have seen it grow beyond its capacity.. there are so many highrises, with limited access.. the traffic has increased, & so have the potholes.. in simple words, the situation has worsened.. we all have to accept that mumbai cannot expand!

Why Deshmukh government failed?
by s subramanyan on Aug 03, 2005 09:33 AM  Permalink

The State and the Municipality have failed the people miserably. The case for making Mumbai a city-state becomes all the more stronger.

Deocngest Mumbai immediately. Shift the Mantralaya by decentralising adminsitration to Nagpur, Sholapur, Ratnagiri and Kokhapur.

The Stock Exchanges can be shifted to Navi Mumbai. There is ahrdly a case for locating CR/WR HQ in Mumbai. Shift them to Vadodra, Ahmedabad or Bhusaval. Similarly, shift the Matunga workshop to Busaval and use the land for creating a new terminal to be used by WR, CR and Konkan Railways.

Drop the plans to sell the mill lands and the plan to lay a bridge on the sea connecting Nava Sheva with Sewri and the sea-freeway from Bandra to Worli for these serve only the city-bound traffic. Use instead this money to ameliorate the living conditions in northern suburbs. Levy a punitive tax on public and private sector companies which wish to continue in Nariman Point, Fort and Churchgate Reclamation.

Rains are here to satay and there is no use blaming the weather gods. Our miseries are man-made.
