The political system has to align and nurture the ambitions of the town planners that seem to be lacking due to resentment that the situation is hopelessly un-repairable. That further exacerbates the efforts to carefully plan the infrastructure that is being overburdened by mass influx into the city. Our politicians were quick to change 'Bombay' the financial powerhouse to Mumbai (Land of goddess Mumba Devi). Now we owe it to the goddess to atleast make a constructive effort to develop an infrastructure to keep it clean without just appearing to do something by setting up committees and passing blame on each other. Lets get together and let the past monsoon lashes be the lesson for us to clean the land of goddess Mumba Devi, not by just maintaining slogans but collectivity acting together, hand in hand with the local government, the private sector and the NGO's and the people together to make it a community starting with basic early warning system and disaster recovery plans before it is too late. Everything is possible in Mumbai. Let us all make this dream come true that will make our children and our grand children proud of us and proud of Mumbai.
The first and the foremost thing is that BMC needs to be scrapped and a new civic authority with ultra modern technology should be in its place. As of now, there is a weak system in place at mumbai with absolutely no willingness on the part of civic authority to take any responsibility. Any new Civic authority should be accountable and responsible with a difference in attitude. Any lethargic old system is very difficult to move.
The second and the most important thing is slums have to be removed from complete mumbai. No matter what. Give them new houses or do anything u want but remove this slums. They are the major cause for failure of making any proper system in mumbai. Relocate the slum dwellers and remove all the slums will solve 60% of the mumbai problems.
Also the old building need to be reconstructed no matter what. Any building more than 25-30 years old should be rebuild keeping in mind the rising population of mumbai and problems within. IF they have financial problems of rebuilding increase the no. of floors and sell them but get your building reconstructed. The example can be followed through Nehru Nagar, Kurla.
Things that should change in Mumbai in particular & everywhere in India in general:
1. Accountability of the city's administrative services
2. Citizens to have long term memory & pursue things that are prominsed to them during election times
3. Kick that 'Chaltha hai' (indifferent) attitude out forever
4. Build & reinforce the city's drainage systems (complete overhaul) before laying a single brick for new building constructions
5. Revamp the urban planning commision with people having knowledge behind the science
6. Encourage mass transit system & discourage individual auto owners & drivers
7. Have individual area governments (like Mayor of Dadar, Thane etc) for better management of resources
8. Have mock disaster drills which is a norm in most developed nation's cities
9. Impose heavy fines for violators of city rules ( in construction, garbage disposal, littering etc)
10. Rehabilitate slum dwellers who have been most affected due to the rains & also the ones who have been forcefully evacuated with some 'Shangai' dreams!
11. Maintain & be proud of our city's IDENTITY! Let others emulate us, not the other way around
After the learning of 7/26 lesson, the Government need to focus on the following as the areas of Improvement keeping the present and growing population in mind. With a double safety factor, assuming the June 26 needs.
24 hours dedicated well trained disaster management crew, mocking these kind of scenario's on regular intervals. They should be having unconventional means like helipoters, steamers etc., to reach to places of need during such calamities.
1. The whole city's drainage system to handle such a disastrous rain. Increasing the the flow rate multifold in each of our drainage flow-ways, keeping in mind the rain water in the entire region of Mumbai. If this option does not meet 100% workable, then to remove the residents from low lying areas permanently to safer areas.
2. Both in Mumbai and Maharashtra, identifying the habitats vulnerable to mudslides/landslides/broken rocks etc., And relocate permanently the poeple to safer places.
3. Hospitals, Communication(Mobile network) Systems, Housing Societies(to help atleast floodlamping the rescue work) to have Power Generators mandatory,
Goverment is the orginasation which has to work when people are in this sort of crisis. If they lack efficency or lethargic to workthen should not stay in power. No goverment can take it easy(as it seems they are not well planned for the problem) for such a big devasation. Please try to do your best and help mumbai
as much as Nature. True, we cant blame Nature for the heavy rain but wht abt power hugry & Greedy Polticians who has made the life literley hell. Everybody in Mumbai was busy with Narain Rane that where he is going & wht he is doing. Nobody was bothered to take pain abt the normal citizen. After the heavy rain, everybody was busy in Rane's oath as Minister . Let Mumbai submerge in water. WHo cares till the Polticians are enjoying over the dead bodies of poor masses.
