Why Mumbai alone?
by Vinod Tuli on Aug 06, 2005 08:09 PM  Permalink

Dear Editor
The space used by all TV channels, Portals and print media on Mumbai floods were keenly watched long series of "Mumbai & Mumbai all the way". How about rains elsewherein teh country flood havocs are an yearly ritual affecting several times the populace of India. It is taken as a God sent 'curse' on the majority. And media - all types just take it in the stride. In addition to Mumbai (rains only), why shouldn't the Union Government and all States for that matter take up the cause on a national level. NDA Government had initiated a project of linking all rivers of teh country - in continuation of a dream of teh great Scientist of India several decades back. Suresh Prabhu was given charge of teh project. But the dilemma with us is taht with the cahngeof Government all noble ideas, if I may call it so,are sent to dustbins.

The basic reason of this calamity was due to natures fury which has never happened in our city at all & due to which the Mumbaites is not prepared in any form to face the same.It will not be appropriate to drive away the mushroomed slums but to restructure it in such a way that no furture slums are permitted. It is generally believed that the vote bank comprises of these dwellers,so any amount of pressures etc.will not be possible to evict. I suggest that the entire slums to be raised down from places where presently there was flooding and shift them forcibly to another location and see to it that they do not ever come again to the spot. The politicians must be taught a lesson by not electing them again of those who cared less. The influx of other citizens needs to be stopped or else we Mumbaites will become minorities as is the case in North Eastern States due to influx other Nations Citizens.

Mumbai

I think rain cannot be blamed. The whole blame goes to city Mayor/Ministers who are lazy to lift their butt to see what's going on in the city mayor/Minister should go out and assure city's citizens for any help city can give in case of disaster, if they ignore they should get fired, recently I was in Mumbai the worse thing I saw was more than 80% of Mumbai's people don't have physical education. Garbage dumped on the street, streets filled up with garbage, same garbage goes in the gutter and in case of the rain just the way Mumbai had on 26th gutter james up and people suffer or die, it's long project but some educated person if runs the city can make Mumbai clean and green.

How to avoid such mishaps again.
by Rajesh Nayak on Aug 05, 2005 05:36 PM  Permalink

Simple answer to avoiding such mishaps again - Wake up our sleeping weather forecast department. Give them a run for their money, they will do a better job.
Weather forecast department is making a fool of itself and others by not predicting at all or predicting totally incorrectly.
Second to this, the drainage system needs to be redesigned to pump out such loads efficiently and quickly.
Its a simple answer to an otherwise seemingly complex problem.

We don't need a Government
by B. Subramanian on Aug 05, 2005 01:58 PM  Permalink

It is all those thousands of people who are suffering are the real cause of this deep routed problem. "CORRUPTION". Every one, Each one have contributed systematically either by bribing are by taking bribe for everything they are supposed to do as duty.

Those employees of every government department, be it city planning, or building sanctions, or health, or coroporation.... all of them.

Dirty politicians are just having fun with all these common people foolishly go around for the graft.

You are having your part of fun in making money by building sweet stories day after day!

Great India! Long live India

MUMBAI CITY
by Hari on Aug 04, 2005 05:51 PM  Permalink

Yes, i agree to an extent that Government should not be hold responsible as it was a seudden natural calamity. Infact it happened all of a sudden that there was no time to act upon it.

But, atleast some actions, like inflatable boats could have been arranged via Air by the Govt. Indian Govt is not so poor afterall, is it?

Now for peoples mistake, apart from leving offices to get to thier homes (anybody will make that mistae...human nature), i was very much hurt when i saw the Cattles/ buffaloes dead on the road. Agree, people from the dairy got nervous during the rain, but they could have opened the rope knots from the cattles, as soon as when they saw that water level has increased.

Was very moved by the spirit of mumbai when i saw the sight, the next morning, people were walking together, helping each other, some vehicles offering lift, and much more.

Come what may, the fact is Mumbai can only be at its Best all the time.

Anyways, what has happened should not be repeated, I pray to God for it. Also, the Govt is well prepared (god forbid) if it hapens again.

HARI
