The recent flood in Mumbai and other cities of Maharastra State is unprecedented. It is a fact that one cannot plan for any extreme situations. But this argument does not help the planners and people involved in governance escape from their responsibility. In India nothing is done with technical back up, sound engineering consideration and prioritizing of activities. Huge sums of money are being drained in preparation of plans, schemes and proposals through various consulting agencies, but it is found that either the reports are faulty, or thrown in the dustbin for some unexplained reasons. Hence it is highly essential that the plans and programmes must be done with sound technical back up and implemented thoroughly and completely. Let the system works with the support of knowdgeable persons than the whims of the a few persons who take upper hand in the planning and programming process because of their position. The technocrats and planners must also understand they should stand to it. Everything has a technical solution, and we have reasons achieve it. The technocrats must accept it as a challenge honestly and the people in governance must allow them to achieve that and deliver.
I think govts in India can change their attitude only if the general mass forces them to do it. So people should become more responsible and take the first action. Challenge the govt. to take steps to improove the infrastructure which includes transportation system and drainage systems. Secondly, its our responsibility to take care of our city. So being conscious about it and not to throw plastic etc in the drainage and taking maximum care that the things are disposed properly is an important duty. These are the first steps to begin with. Unless and until we become responsible and give up the "CHALTA HAI" attitude, its not going to be good. We still have a long way to go, and imbibing this awareness is a must.
Yes this is our city and it can be saved , only if the citizens decide to change and change the face of the city , it is hightime we stopped the blame game and started acting ourselves insted of waiting for others to act , it is duty of all the Mumbaiites to nurture this city as ones own garden , the 26 July 2005 , episode was a natures revenge on us and it was of a very very high magnitude and no one person or anyone can be blamed , even the US which claimed it was the safest and most secured state in the world could not save it itself from the man made tragedy so howcome one can blame anyone for the disaster on the 26 July , we should start making autonomous bodies the members which are the citizens of Bombay area wise and launch a major cleanliness drive the very first thing and next thing is to stop the influx of people coming into Bombay daily in search of work or other things , i think there should be legislature in this regards in the Legislative Assembly and make Mumbai if not a " City governed by the centre " atleast a city with different category , people who came to Mumbai on or before 1995 should only be allowed to stay here and others should be asked to return home.
Nothing can change this city except total military rule,or actions similer to zimbabwe goverment, throw out bangladeshis and all slums dwellers, the most embarrasing scene in this city is people answering natures call in full view of public. banning dance bar was the perfect step. now ban slums. make it a law if u dont pay tax you cannot live in this city its true there is no civic sence among common man, but who is this common man, walk any where on the street u will see 95 percent of the faces are from U.P, Bihar and other states, most of these people are uneducated, obviously they lack civic sence, bec its the way of living in their home states. stop all the migrants in to this city, save its soul, mumbai doesnt even smell right, you know what i mean. kick out all the street vendors right from gateway of india to dahisar. no hawkers should be seen any where,in the town area. ban beer bars in residential areas, ban loud speaker every where,be it mosque or navratri. no public demonstration without prior notice should be allowed, if held, they should be imprisoned for minimum 1 week, without food. people who spit on the road should be made to wash their spit.
Dear Editor The space used by all TV channels, Portals and print media on Mumbai floods were keenly watched long series of "Mumbai & Mumbai all the way". How about rains elsewherein teh country flood havocs are an yearly ritual affecting several times the populace of India. It is taken as a God sent 'curse' on the majority. And media - all types just take it in the stride. In addition to Mumbai (rains only), why shouldn't the Union Government and all States for that matter take up the cause on a national level. NDA Government had initiated a project of linking all rivers of teh country - in continuation of a dream of teh great Scientist of India several decades back. Suresh Prabhu was given charge of teh project. But the dilemma with us is taht with the cahngeof Government all noble ideas, if I may call it so,are sent to dustbins.
