It is foolish to believe Musharraf.
by Sharad Korde, Thane on Apr 23, 2005 07:20 PM  Permalink

I think we are peace-crazy. We want peace with Pakistan at any price. We are so impatient for it that we get overwhelmed even by some small insignificant gestures from any Pakistani and start dreaming peace. Given the previous experience with Pakistani rulers and their Islamic agenda, we are not only too quick to praise Musharraf but utterly foolish to believe him.

good timely warning!!!!
by Raghothama on Apr 21, 2005 06:17 AM  Permalink

Mr Raman, ur article is a real eye opener. U are very much right in saying not to count the chickens before they hatch. The media seems to be reading too much into the events and unnecessarily hyping the turn of events. Pakistan has an excellent record of breaking the treaties/accords and India has the history of being caught off guard. People at the decision making level should be cautious, for, those who don't read history make bad history.
Regards

My response to the article by B Raman

It may be too early to expected fruits of labour. Yet let's give it a try. An effort has been made in right earnest, at least on the part of our leadership.

Possibly yes!

As suggested, it may be the Stockholm Syndrome that is driving our political leadership to heap such praise on the General. However, such peaceful efforts are essential to bring down the acts of terrorism unleased on our country for the past 25years. Simply because we are not such economical and Technological super power such as America to bulldoze over Pakistan and rest of the world through money and muscle power. Within the limited scope what ever are being attempted is commendable.

Indo Pak Relations : A vicious circle
by Sarang on Apr 20, 2005 08:50 AM  Permalink

Hi,

I agree with Raman's point that we might be expecting chickens even before the eggs are hatched.
Knowing Pakistan's way of treating this relationship for last so many years,it would be stupid on our part to straight away trust them.I would rather suggest that India takes up the problem of Terrorism with Pakistan with an altimatum of Zero Infiltration and no casualties in Kashmir or any border area with Pakistan.
There is nothing wrong in these efforts of improving relations but this has to be reciprocated. Our neighbours are yet to prove their reliability.
As rightly quoted about Pakistan " They always come back."

Too QUICK to praise Musharraf
by SatinderMullick on Apr 20, 2005 12:30 AM  Permalink

Violent ways have been tried to solve Kashmir issue for 57 years.Win/Lose will not work but win/win might save face and bring peace/unite Kashmiris on both sides to enjoy the freedom/trade/prosperity.
However, there are many misguided fanatics who believe in win/lose strategy and will not give win/win strategy an easy time to proceed. For Kashmiris, freedom to share prosperity is KEY--which win/lose strategy did not allow for over 25 years.
CBM is nice way to bring normality to Kashmir and its people.Who owns India--its people.Kashmir sandwiched between Pakistan and India needs both to prosper in trade and enjoy freedom from violence.Beautiful valley of Kashmir--like Switzerland--has to exercise NEUTRALITY like Swiss did during the second World War.Kashmiri,I hope learn a lesson from Swiss history and give this CBM a chance to their better future or suffer like Palestinians or Afghanistan.

hello ,
Its a waste even approaching Musharraf, the people of Pakistan do not have enough belief in this person. Its really a positive approach wherin both countries are trying to build good relations, but dont u people understand the outlook looks its a waste of time and money again. We the masses from both countries still think there would be a day where everything is really sweet and cute. But till we have people like Musharraf , Farooq abdullah things r not going to work out. This is another approach which is totally a waste .

need for a real democratic government in pakistan
by manav on Apr 19, 2005 11:08 PM  Permalink

dealing with gen mushraff will be difficult as he is basically a military dictator who has usurped power in
pakistan.

real lasting peace with pakistan will come when gen mushraff paves way for a civilian govenment based on free and fair elections in pakistan.
