I find this question a bit silly. Every rich and poor has to do a lot of thing which is associated with energy and power generation. Any country who are rich in power and energy resources are developed and strong nations, be it the USA or Saudi Arabia. Brining Nuclear power to India will have following merits: 1) Direct increment in electricity genereation. 2) That will boost directly industries, with less stringent rules for birth of comapnies. 3) That in turn will generate employments. Jobless poor people would get jobs. 4) Independence from conventional energy sources will give cleaners envioronment, better public health, and certainly lesser natualr calamities like flood in Bihar and Mumbai every year due to global warming. 5) Direct employment will cause lesser corruption, cleaner system. 6) Millions of villages who are still without electricity will get electricity to make their children go to schools and study in night at home, irrigate their lands with continued supply of water as well as harvest faster ...all directly enhacing the productivity from villages and lessening the current huge divide between village and cities. Any source of energy and power will be a boon for otherwise collapsing system of India.

Murli, There can be no doubt that N-deal will help this country in the long run but don’t day dream on the matters you have highlighted as 1~6. On the energy front this country has in 60 years messed itself up. That mess has nothing to do with the source of the energy it has to do with the fact that our energy planners have wasted time.
The point that you have to take in to consideration is that Nuclear energy is going to cost over Rs 9 a unit. Enron failed because as soon as Oil prices went up it could not sell power at Rs 3.60/- Hydroelectric power will remain the main stream of our energy needs for a long time. That is the area that we should focus on! Your point 6 has nothing to do with electricity generation; it has to do with distribution. If you think that at Rs 9 a unit the marginal farmer will irrigate his farmland I think it is unjustified optimism! The N-deal is good since it will start paying dividends after 2030. But for this country to survive till then we need energy and we need cost efficient energy.

I agree with PKN.Over enthuastic media hype this issue.good point is raised by PKN is distribution. In Gujarat state govt porivides 24 hrs power to every villages by his Jyoti gram Yozna in present time.Today 3% of nuke power available in India and By 2034 it will reach to 8%.Long time to go.If Gujarat manages to provide 24 hrs power to its ppl why not other states.Good quality of disribution is the right answer.

Don't forget the bonus Pu-239/U-235. We need to distillate enough of that stuff so that we can wipe pakistan off the face of this planet a zillion times over when the time comes.
Poor man will say 'Talaq, Talaq, Talaq' to his wife for getting rid of her. If she lodges a complaint and police comes to arrest him, he can throw these bombs at Police/Admnistration/Court etc.
First of.. why would you ask a "poor man" his opinion about the nuclear deal?
Second, how are the two even related? I heard people saying -- there more important issues like saving people drowning in Bihar. WTF.. are we to suspend all economic activity to save drowning and hungry people. That is an altogether different thread of national decision-making!
Third, the nuclear deal is about nuclear energy, and not a nuclear bomb. It is about energy independence for better infrastructure and to achieve self-reliance. The poor will benefit too. How would irrigation work without electricity?

I agree. The Indian press needs to be Outsourced to other countries - perhaps Sri Lanka or Bangla Desh. The level competence of Indian Journalists and reporters are at an appalling low. I would'nt be surprised if even the Indian press thinks that Nuclear Suppliers Club is some kind of Gambling Club of sorts or may be a 'Polo Club'!! As regards the confusion between Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Bomb is rather 'Blur' - much like the journlists view. The India press community thinks Enegry comes from the Bomb - so without the Bomb - there cannot be Energy. Can't blame them - even Einstein wondered about this.

Well said. Ridiculous to ask an illiterate poor chap about purpose of a nuclear bomb? First ask him if he knows the meaning of 'nuclear'? Evenlearned chaps in this forum havent understood the diff b/w nuclear bomb(the topic) and nuclear energy (their comments.
All those who are asking this question -"what will a poor man do with a nuclear bomb?" have to answer one question.
Did they ask the same question in 1998 when Vajpayee Govt conducted the nuclear tests?
Was nuclear bomb more important than Roti in 19998? Or is it just the itch of the BJP sympethizers that is coming in open now?
I must put it on record that some nuclear scientists who in 19998 said that nuclear tests were not required, were beaten in Chennai by the saffron brigade.
Manmohan Singh with solid backing of Sonia & Congress got the best deal from NSG. Short-sighted BJPites have developed stomoch-ache. That's all.
When Rajeev & Sam Pitroda were taking this country through computerization, the short-sighted Vajpayee & Advani were asking the same question at the top of their voice - "what can a poor man do with a computer?"

The topic does not have anything political in it, thankfully. Then why are you raising the Cong flag and berating the BJP? Your place is not here but rather on the street... to make noise that your political masters want you too. Noise made here will not be heard by them.

why was 1974 explosion was carried out and this ostracisation from nuclear commerce took place? Without 1998 explosion this concession would have not come through.

To bring political matter into highlight, what's the reason of bringing this NSG towards the fag end of the congress govt.? to gain vote of trust for the next election ? Why not much earlier ?
Talking of inflation, increase of electric power from nuclear reactors would obviously increase the economy for India on a long run if not immediately. Uninterrupted power supply to all homes is still a dream for we Indians. Some day the dal would not cost Rs.60 anymore, although it does, earning power would have also increased considerably...

Was the INFLATION THIS high in the last 16 years.. No it was not.. So you have no right to involve parties and make this a political issue... End of the "Govt" is responsible for making sure that there is rise in the inflation rate and the current Govt has not be able to deliver inspite of 2 well known financial experts playing it at the center and one can denie that fact...

Correction. End of the day Govt is responsible for making sure there is NO rise in the inflation rate
Poor men and women paid for ENRON and UNION CARBIDE. They will pay again for junk American nuclear plants, when The Congress leaders will collect their Dollar bribes in their Swiss Bank Accounts. This is the reward for selling their country for a fistful of Dollars, which the poor men have never seen.
I think perhaps we could have more wars with Pakistan after Kargil but nuclear bomb has heavy effect and its the main cause for stopping all the wars after that. So believe it or not nuclear bombs provide you security. A common man/poor man can concentrate on his progress, Thats the power of nuclear bomb.
