Let us hope for the better
by mallaiah anchoori on May 21, 2008 06:16 PM  Permalink

There is nothing to feel so great about this news ,as several times in the past, Pakistan told the same thing but continued its activities against India only to prove that a dog's tail can never be straightened.President Musharraf's words that the wishes of Kashmir people need to be respected conveys lot of inner meaning and is subject to any interpretation of their choice later. But one thing is certain! At least a beginning in a diplomatically cordial atmosphere has been done and let us hope that a well beginning is half done.In the recent past, with change in the form of Govt, there however, appears a discernible change in Pakistaha's's approach and attitude which should,if contiued,go a long way in resolving all our long pending issues with it.However,it is billion dollar question as to how far, with its capricious nature and day to day changing versions,Pak could keep up this trend much wanted by both the countries in mutual interest. If some thing concretely good emerges out of these talks and is implemented,it will be a feather in the cap of Congress which they can boast of and encash as election manifesto.

Pranab breaks the ice with new Pakistan government
by subir sengupta on May 21, 2008 04:59 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

"aLL BILATERAL ISSUES WILL BE SOLVED THROUGH DIALOGUE", HEARING THIS STATEMENT AFTER ALMOST ALL HIGH LEVEL MEETINGS. I THINK, OUR DIPLOMATS AND MINISTERS ARE FOCUSED ON EACH INDIVIDUAL MEETING AND COMEOUT WITH ROUTINE RHETORIC FOR INDIVIDUAL SATISFACTION AND SMOOTH PASSING OF THEIR TIME WITHOUT AT ALL THINKING ABOUT THE COUNTRY. oUR LEADERS DO NOT KNOW TO TAKE RISK AND HOW TO BEHAVE BOLD. NOTHING IS GOING TO COME OUT FROM THIS MEETING. THE HEADLINE 'PRANAB BREAKS THE ICE' IS REALLY A LAUGHING STOCK. WHAT UNUSUAL HE HAS ACHIEVED? COULD HE TAKE IN WRITING FROM PAKISTAN THAT THE GOVERNMENT WILL NOT HELP INFILTRATION? COULD HE TAKE THEIR AFFIRMATION THAT PAKISTAN WILL NOT START FIRING IN THE BORDER UNPROVOKED? THE TIME HAS NOT COME TO TRUST PAKISTAN VERBALLY.

But, Indira Gandhi missed a nice chance to get back Kashmir during 1971 war for getting Independence for Bangladesh.

The army of Pakistan were literally curshed by Indian army from all the sides - air force, military, naval force...Pakistan was literally pleading to stop attack. Indira Gandhi should have made use of this situation to end the Kashmir issue...She just stopped after getting independence to Bangladesh (East Pakistan)..

Another mistake which Indira made was allowing Bangladeshi refugees inside India. Also, she didnt ask them to return back to Bangladesh after getting independence.

Now, bangladeshis are joining hands with Pakistan & Kashmiri militants and bombing India (which got them independence)

BTW most of the BD refugees in 1971 were Hindus.
Muslims came illegaly after BD became independent. The main reason for immigration was economic because BD was much poorer than India.

BD is now hailed for it's population control. But the truth is that they are still breeding like rats, not in BD , but in India.

Let's boycott these illegal immigrants economically and force these parasites out of the country.

Next time you hire a maid, make sure she is not a BD illegal.

But the real problem in Kasmir is that Pakistan says that during 1947 when the ratio of Muslim : Hindu was 77:20 they wanted a plebisite (sort of opinion of Kashmiris) on whether they want to be a part of Pak or India. This plebisite was approved by UN, but has not taken place till now.

If this sort of plebisite is happening then whom would the Kashmir prefer - India or Pakistan.

Knowing very well that the J&K is full of Muslims, India didnt want to conduct plebisite. India claims that illegal Pakistanis are still in J&K. So, the plebisite will have no meaning.

Pakistan was pushing for plebisite till 1971 bcos they believed that J&K people will fully support them. But in 1971 war between India & Pak, it was noted that people of J&K were fully supporting India.

So, these terrorism is happening for decades.

But, legally all part of J&K belongs to india taking into account the ACCESSION AGREEMENT BETWEEN INDIA & KING HARI SINGH.

Though Kashmir was ruled by Mughals, it was under Sikhs rule from 19th century.
Gulab Singh was Maharaj of Kashmir from 1820. He was friendly with Brithish & handed over Lahore to them and got the full state of J&K from British in an agreement. After his death in 1857, Ranbir Singh became the king. His grandson Hari Singh ascended the throne in 1925. Remember till now J&K was an independent state - neither to Pak nor to India. At that time, J&K was 77% muslims & 20% Hindus. Their legislative assembly represented their will to accede to State of Pakistan.
Hari Singh had a "standstill" agreement with Pak only for trade, travel, communication etc. BUT NOT FOR ACCESSION.
But, there was no similar agreement bet J&K and India...(Again remember at that point J&K was an independent state - nither part of India or Pak)..Hari Singh never wanted J&K to be a part of Pakistan.
After Indian Independance Mountbatten was Gov General for sometime & Hari Singh had good relationship with British. During Oct 1947 a pakistani group called Pashtuns invaded Kashmir to frighten Hari Singh & accede Kashmir with Pak. But, Hari Singh took the help of Mountbatten & India. He signed an AGREEMENT OF ACCESSION i.e. all part of J&K belongs to India and only to India. Indian army went to J&K and drove away Pashtuns Pakistani group.

But, Pakistan objected that the ACCESSION AGREEMENT WAS FAKE. Then it was presented by India in UN & it was proved the legality of ACCESSION beyond doubt.

Pranab at Party
by bharath on May 21, 2008 04:08 PM  Permalink

Pranab and, for that matter, all Indian politicians can learn a few good things from the Pakistani politicians..... to wear a good business suit!

I wonder when we'll see our politicuans in business wear as opposed to 'Nehru' suits, dhotis, lungis, etc.
