Shobha De's Book
by Uday Andhare on May 05, 2008 06:38 PM  Permalink

Though Shobha De is a good writer and her book is full of every day experiences, yet she lacks the depth of an erudite. Her hair-brained approach to serious issues like urban poor divide and poverty smacks of insincerity of her approach

When will she decide to accept the truth ?
by sibby mathews on May 05, 2008 05:01 PM  Permalink

She may keep convincing herself that she is physically attractive and charming...... (yikes....that perennially constipated look !!)

She may keep crowing about her charm to all those out there who agree to be fooled.....

She may keep fooling herself and her gullible readers about her value as a writer....

She may keep going on with her drivel about the desirability of wealth, soft porn, women's issues and may have really fooled herself into being convinced about her acceptability as an authority on these subjects......

But even she, the 'literary' lightweight she has always been, cannot hide from herself for much longer the fact that she turned permanently green in colour (metaphorically) when she heard a decade ago that Arundhati Roy won the booker prize. Oh, the years since have been so heavy with heartburn, so weighed down by her jealousy (knowing in her heart of hearts that she can never hope to be even considered by the booker committee), so packed with yearning, so full of doomed hope that few Indians will notice that she is after all not the diva of Indian writing in English that she would like herself to be considered as !!!!

We need more entreprenuers, they can give India rapid growth.
by manoj on May 05, 2008 10:39 AM  Permalink

In India we have land, labour, capital. But knowledge and entreprenuer are missing. We need a lot of courageous people entreprenuer who can risk their time, effort, money to set up business. That will creat profit for him, job for unemployed. Problem is many people just want to do any small job and live a lezy life. Thats not gonna work if we dream to make india a super power. we need people who can set up business offices/shops etc.
Also knowledge is missing. We have to set up system where if entreprenur want to start business knowledge should be easily available to him about market, product, service etc Then he will feel confidence and start business.
America is richest nation because it provide money, knowledge everything to its citizen who want to start business. And u must know that more than 50% of american are working in smaller business. That generate income for people easily and tax for govt. Then govt. has a lot of money to provide best infrastructure. the cycle goes on. Now china is following same mantra.

Boom of MEDIOCRITY
by red chillies on May 03, 2008 09:40 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Entire writing is of no literary value and a monologue of pretty ordinary narration of desi ideas in a westernized pattern with an old idea of selling the rural image for money to the riches.
Entire narration is done with a marketing idea in the backdrop of it.
Old desi description in a BILAYYATI bottle ..the way it was absorbed by the Author herself.

Nothing is Booming except mediocrity and crookedness in INDIA ;it is only the cheaters who are gaining and LUSTY are into AMASSING.
People are becoming more corrupt and corruption is promoted in a bigger way...even by the name of LITERATURE.

India's time has come
by krishna paknikar on May 03, 2008 01:37 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Shobha De is a articulate writter even if she does not fall into conventional mould for her thoughts and topics. There are still many reluctant to grant her the freedom of a matured writer possibly of gender bias.
Her artical is quite inspiring even though lot of it is feel good element in it.Unquestionably younger generation is making of different time and therefore there attitude is upbeat, enterprising and carefree to the point of recklessness without values and ethics. All this does not mean earlier generation did not add any worth to what India is today. The shine and the glitter now seen is all the blessing of globalisation and uncle SAM.The silver linnig is it has taught to be hardworking and worthy in a society which has mostly indulged in leisure, gossip and purposeless acts.To achieve and perform relentlessly needs thoughtfullness and planning and a visionary leadership all this is not seen on the horizon. It will be great is somthing comes well by circumstances without loosing what is achieved at great pains.

Shobha articulates pretty well as Page 3 girl. I read her in my teens and kept discussing her "Sisters" and "Stary Nights" endlessly in the late night hostel sittings......... We realized pretty late it was a big waste of time.....

India is on the move and the whole worl knows it.... This is an effort to cash on it..... Anyway its a free world....

But the booming India not a dramatic transformation....... its the hard work and the values of our earlier generations.... the belief in good education ..... higher education of our middleclass all these years is paying off....
I have moved from a Village to Mumbai to US..... and still in touch with the rural.... urban and MNCs......There is a lot of hardwork ahead.... its not the time to celebrate....

WE NEED LEADERS & WRITERS LIKE APJ KALAM
