As there is no National language in our country one has to speak in English Hindi is the official language of our country. So no language can claim to be a national language because not a single language is spoken in the entire country. Every state has its own language and it's dialects so dont fight think over.
Hindi is our national language, Jaya should have avoided the comment on his inability to speak marathi. She would have used Hindi as a national language being a hindustani nor UP Wala or Marathi etc

I am Proud to say that I am a Maharashtrian as its my birth place, but my mother tongue is malayalam.
Whatever the MNS have done in maharashtra in the name of marathi is not at all fair...everybody knows it very well who benefits from such policies.
But whatever statement Jaya Bachchan made a couple of days back is unfair & she should say sorry to the whole Maharashtra for such unnecessary comments.
Its a land of the great Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj & one of the most precious part of INDIA, so definately the whole world should respect it.
Why dont common people understand it firmly that Language is just a MEDIUM of communication. It is not an issue of Asmita and all not. Where has all the freedom of speech, freedom to express has gone? The Bhajiwallas the Sabjiwallas sell 'Kanda' and 'Batata' and not 'pyaz' or 'aloo' they have selected by themselves a language to communicate with the people without anybody's force. It is the need of the hour which makes people learn different languages if they want to communicate. In Hindi and Marathi there are words common like Prem, Shanti, Sadbhavna... which the opportunists conveniently forget.

Neelima I'm agry with u that language is medium of communication...here in Maharastra 98% people understand marathi...so there convenience the communication language should be Marathi...so board on shop should be in Marathi...we have not invited any one to maharastra ...outsiders came in maharastra for survival...so for their survival they should learn marathi..
UPwale will speak hindi, Guratwale will speak gujrati, TNwale will speak tamil, who is raj(khaj) thackray to decide which language people should use???
Its matter of disgust for all Indian that our country is divided in linguistic basis, we dont have consense over one language and the result is that never ending fight over language, religion, regionalism going own and some Dadagiri type homeborn parties giving fuel to these type of sentiments, which might lead for the separation of the country in small small pieces. Everyone should ready for that if Shivsena or MNS type parties should not given proper nail. Language is the personal way of talk whatever one want to speak he can speak on which our Institution agrees also, they why the Marathi Manus = Ban Manus, making so much hue and cry over Hindi if they dont want to speak no body forcing them to speak in Hindi they need to be with Marathi, it will be good for all languages if they speak Hindi also and make Hindi International language, its pitty no language of India is International language, whereas, French which is small country and its language is international.
