Nothing wrong
by Tom on Sep 08, 2008 07:59 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Rediff is unnecessarily making a issue out of it. Stop listening to leaders like Thackerays. There are many well to do Marathis in Patna, who have never tried to learn and speak the local languages of Bihar. No body objects them because it's there right to freedom of language. Then people from Biharis or UP are also free to speak any language of there of choice. At the same time leaders like Raj must be made to understand this. Mrs Bachchan has wisely hinted leaders like Thackerays.

what the hell
by dharmendra jadoun on Sep 08, 2008 07:57 PM  Permalink

Everybody has right to speak in any language of his/her choice or comfort, unless it is some govt message.

Nobody can force you to learn a language, you may keep a translator to avoid communication problem (to yourselves).

Unless Hindi is Modified
by deepak on Sep 08, 2008 07:56 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Unless Hindi is modified or standardized it will be further alienate itself. Hindi today has drifted away from its Indian roots and does not relate to Indians of other languages. Hindi has become Urdu and is perhaps the most UnIndian of all languages. Hindi needs to come closer to other Indian languages especially of the Sanskrit group. There is hardly any difference between Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujrati etc when these languages stick to their Sanskrit roots. India's planners lacked vision, allowed use of multiple Sanskrit derivative scripts and a profusion of Persian & Arabic words, which was unnecessary. Indian education should have included texts on the commonness of Indian languages, encouraged study of literature of various languages and regions in school and a respect for all Indian languages would ahve developed. Instead, Indians kids today hardly have any knowledge of their native languages, leave alone other Indian languages and literature, writers, poets or history. Like most things, Indian planners messed up big time.

Boss, ya to jai hind mein vishwas karo, ya jai maharashtra mein. you cant have it both ways. These are simple politically manipulated statements meant to instigate the incapable of commonsensical thought public. Remember India will probably survive without Maharashtra and Maharashtrians...but the other way round - impossible.

Havng said that I am a hard core Maharastrian. But I am an Indian first... .. and not Marathi speaking or Hindi speaking or whatever. I have been lucky enough to be blessed with parents who could offer me decent education which has enabled me to think on my own. and As a citizen of a nation such as ours, I really it is upto educated people to expend energies towards our nation's progress, rather than keep wallowing in localised and politicized muck.

Regionality reflects narrow mindedness
by bibhu das on Sep 08, 2008 07:51 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

We should feel proud of being Indians and should respect our national language "HINDI"
Mrs Jaya Bachan's statement certifying Hindi as UP's language is narrow minded, She should have told that Hindi is our national language that is why I speak hindi. Our national interest should be protected and pronounced with priority. Here one should not forget our philosophy is to preach Vasudevyakutumbakam which can truly reflect the true and patriotic feeling of unified INDIA

MESS OVER LANGUAGE
by dinesh dave on Sep 08, 2008 07:49 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

We live in a democratic country where we have our choice to stay where we feel like. Hindi is our national language and should get the respect it deserves. I also strongly feel, one should learn the language of the state where he lives. There is no reason for Raj Thackerey to do police-ing as a dictator. The way he is trying to force people speak marathi, it seems that something is wrong with the language itself. You cannot force anyone to speak any particular language. It should so happen that efforts should be made to inspire you to speak the language of the place where u live in. Mr Raj Thackerey is only causing distrubance which will only hamper the progress of the state.

Jaya Bachchan's speech
by Guest on Sep 08, 2008 07:40 PM  Permalink

Her choice of words were politically wrong. If she wants to speak in hindi because its our national language then i support her but if it is to take a dig at any other state politician or any thing then its very shocking. Always thought that she had a secular and matured mind but no so alas! looks like she is trying to get attention somehow or the other nowadays.

When elephants fight, the grass gets crushed
by sanjay wadhera on Sep 08, 2008 07:33 PM  Permalink

This latest spat will affect some poor labour from Bihar/UP who is just trying to make both ends meet & somehow survive in this inhospitable world. Accomplished persons like them must know that their words have cascading effect & therefore, must be spoken responsibly. Can you imagine India without UP/Bihar/Maharashtra ? Let's rise above the ordinary, pray all.
