Mohanlal
by bala sreenivasan on Apr 10, 2008 04:49 PM  Permalink

Mohanlal indeed is one of the greatest actors of our times. I can cite any numberof filmswhere he has touched new heights in histrionics- I.V Sasi;s 'Uyarangalil..' to Sibi Malyil's 'Dasaratham'.
I am amazed at the way he has transformed from his 'Manjil virinj pookkal or thenum vayambum days to what he is now.
I am from Tamil Nadu with a lot of respect for the Kerala artistes.
Murali is another fine artiste who is yet to get his due recognition.
As rightly said by somebody in these columns, Murali, Thilagan, Nedumudi, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Sreenivasan are all superb peformers.
Malayalam industry is ay ahead of others in every aspect.

Jury members!!
by Terence on Apr 10, 2008 12:26 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Don't gt me wrong, this is the 1st time iam hearing of jury members were headed by assamese filmmaker. Although, i am a tamilian and i only know all south indian films and hindi films. Not even heard of assamese films often.

I have heard of assamese films, rarely like sinhalese cinema(sri lanka), but not often as bengali cinema or south indian cinema as is often heard in india other than bollywood.

So the winners were really unexpected. Since ore kadal ws more sucess than paradesi, hope tht mammootty will win best actor award. I also expectd paradesi to win best film, but the film that won was a suprise.

I also liked tht nallu pennugal won awards, but dissapointed tht geetu mohandas did not win for nallu penugal or for thakarachenda possibly for best actress. But meera deserved it more than geetu mohandas though.

Well, kerala state awards have only these kind of juries and evrytime its new, so these awards ar not biased. Evn the judging of the movies in international film festival of kerala is also good, they bring filmmakers from south america, middle east etc.. They shud keep on doing tht since filmmakers from arnd the country ar exposed to malayalam cinema and also kerala can get a view of filmmakers arnd the country and their works.

But ther ar few popular awards i.e asianet, mathrabhoomi(for tamil and malayalam films), amrita t.v etc.. the audiences also pick good choices for the winners, but not as good as the jury picks.

Meera
by SK on Apr 09, 2008 10:46 PM  Permalink

Meera Jasmine could have easily been branded as just another glam heroine that can act. Her looks and screen appeal would have guaranteed that.

But she rose above all that, and has now shaped into a complete actress. She does not show too much skin for survival and has stamped her class as an actor par excellence by winning even a national award.

Hats off Meera! You will go a long way!

Kudos to malayalam movies
by Samosachat on Apr 09, 2008 06:05 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I applaud the malayalam cenema. They make very meaningful movies and use actors and actresses not based on just looks. Unlike the Tamil movies where the actresses these days are imported from Bombay just for their looks while the actors are allowed to be ugly.( male chauvinism)

I am a Malayali, but I beg to differ dude.

When you say actors are allowed to be 'ugly', what do you mean? Some Tamil actors may not fall in the category of chocolate Bollywood heroes with peacock beauty, they look handsome to a large section of the people.

Most importantly their attitude and behaviour off screen are much better than their Bolly counterparts. They are more human and down-to-earth.

Attitude and behaviour are a much more endearing factor than good looks but with an attitude that stinks

The point I am making is, when it comes to heroes we are taliking of attitude behaviuor etc. When it comes to actresses how come the same criteria does not apply? That is what I ment by male chauvinism. I really feel sorry for the tamil girls being left out because they dont fall in the category of "peacock beauty"

Good point, but actresses tht ar now famous only b.c thy make a good pair w/a famous actor and hence only looks count.

Present actresses in tamil cinema shud learn not to do those useless good looking, dance arnd the hero roles, wearin skimpy clothes and have no solid role what so ever.

Because tht demeans status of woman, and might as well apply the strip bar scenario to these actresses.

Wrong, tamil actors ar very good an infact better than telugu actors in terms of acting, looks does not matter in south indian cinema as far as actors are concerned, or a muscle body.

Actress, i admit in tamil cinema have seen a a dearth, but we have good actresses i.e padmapriya, priyamani, bhavana which get full lead roles w.scope as opposed to being their for hero's sake and couple of songs-dance.

Asin, trisha, nayantara have all been used as dolls and no characters wer written for them, evn though thy acted in sucessful films w/big actors.

So now ther ar balance of really good "actresses" and not just dolls, so tamil cinema is improving and we can def. see writers and directors getting good roles for ladies.

I have no problem with actors not falling into any defined category. But the same should apply for actresses also. If you have a tamilian based household in a story does'nt it make sense to have a tamilian girl also. I know occassionally you can import based on the story line. But this seems to be the norm in Tamil movies.

A great actor
by Samosachat on Apr 09, 2008 06:01 PM  Permalink

Mohanlal is a phenominal actor. I saw him in Manichitra Thazhu because I was curious to know how the original of Bool Bulaiyya was with the great beauty Shobhana. I am not a malayali. So I have not seen many malayalam Movies.
