You can't generalize. There have been thousands of female-oriented roles where females played the lead role in the movie. Very recently as well, in movies such as Laaga Chunri mein daag, Bhool Bhuliya, Jab We Met...you can see females leading so well. There are so many examples in the movies of the past as well.
