It's the time for Bio Disel and electronic vehicles.
by shyamalendu prusty on May 29, 2008 11:33 AM  Permalink

It's time for looking for the alternet.
Othewise it'll take less time for our good economy to be destroyed.
I appeal govt and scientist come together and work on Bio Disel or electronic vehicles.
If you can find the alternatives we can rule the world.
We have sufficient land for Bio fuel cultivation.

is anybody listening
by azaad on May 29, 2008 11:21 AM  Permalink

the alarm bells have been ringing since a decade..but we have failed to evolve any viable, innovative alternatives...india is very rich is solar and wind energy....solar electricity can be effectively used for several in situ purposes.
promoting public transport instead of personal transport....
impose heavy duties on personal vehicles...
improve mass transport of goods...thus less dependence on the trucks...
it needs a multipronged approach to tackle the upcoming demon

Stupid article
by G A on May 28, 2008 10:44 PM  Permalink

One of the most stupid article, talking abt out-of-box thinking, but thinking is still confined to deep inside a box. Oil wells will dry sooner than later, hence this imposing taxes/levies etc is a foolish solution. We have to move fast into alternate fuels and energy sources, develop solar, wind, hydel and hydrogen fusion. Move to electric cars and if we have visionary leaders, capture the world market in 10 years from now. Rememeber Indira, she felt that mobiles were a luxury and people had to pay rs 20 / min, if she had any vision, we wud be churning out millions of mobiles in india today and supplying to the world.

Typical Beauraucratic Solutions
by Chunnu Prasad on May 28, 2008 06:14 PM  Permalink

Your solutions, if implemented will only lead to no solutions since all that you write has already been tried at some or the other points. The simple & most practical solutions is to reduce the taxes & raise the price as per the international prices. This would expose us to the ground reality since a country like India cannot afford to give subsidies of this quantum. And why should products like Petrol & LPG be subsidised which are used by the Middle & above middle class. By getting a realistic price the users will start looking at ways & means on conserving fuel & this on a macro level will reduce overall demand of crude & would eventually bring pressures on the crude prices. The prices once fixed on market rates should then be revieweed and revised every month based on previous month trends. This will avoid such shocks of big hikes & will also reduce when the crudes prices cool down. The Govt should utilise the subsidy funds on a more productive way & create permanent assets like schools, hospitals, roads, power ect for the long term benefits particularly for the poor.

subsidise electric bikes
by paruthi V on May 28, 2008 01:30 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

and subsidise batteries, and solar panels. Create a research team from IIT and IISC for new energy sources. Bullshit government politicians. bury them and create petrol from their bodies.

Oil conundrum
by Priya Jagat on May 28, 2008 01:27 PM  Permalink

Pity the FM as he has to choose between devil and deep sea. Raising prices is the only solution. It may lead to more inflation and lower economic growth but then we cannot stop consuming oil as there is no cheaper alternative at present. Anyways, per capita consumption of oil is already very low in India and you cannot restrict consumption further at the cost of development.

We need to do thorough Analysis before giving solutions
by Chola The Greatest in the Universe on May 28, 2008 07:04 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

In our country most of the people use their vehicles for commuting to work, Trucks, Public transport systems(train & buses).

1. Personal Vehicles - Petrol as fuel
2. Trucks - Diesel
3. Public transport - Diesel
4. Ships - Diesel and other forms of mixed oils
5. Aviation - Petrol

If you look at the overall figure, Petrol constitutes only lesser portion of the overall fuel need while Diesel constitutes the major portion.

First the price distinction between Petrol & Diesel should not be there apart from differences in manufacturing costs.

Right now, if you increase the petrol price only to subsidize Diesel price which means, Individual vehicle owners already paying hefty price to subsidize Diesel and continue to take the burden further. I think rise in petrol price is not required instead rise the price of Diesel.

In India alternate energy sources are scarcely being tried out so not much is happening. I am not sure what IIT wallas and other big institutions on top of TATAs and Baja's doing? Looks like they have no ideas and waiting for some whiteman in Amrika or Europe to find out so that they can do 'service' for them - just like our Murthy does!

You have a point.. diesel is used by commercial vehicles for profit.. so why should that be subsidised more than petrol.. make diesel on par with petrol or make petrol cheaper than diesel, like abroad

Raise fuel prices
by MS on May 27, 2008 08:53 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Fuel is still cheaper in India than in Europe. It costs 93 rupees a litre in Germany. We should reduce our addiction to foreign oil by raising fuel prices.

Lesser Oil consumption means lesser forex outflow. Lesser Forex outflow means stronger rupee. Stronger Rupee means lesser inflation.

As simple as that.

You are missing the higher inflation as price goes up for fuel. Please don't subject us to higher inflation still petrol is cheaper than America
