Is Bengal ready for Reindustrialisation?
by kraft on Jun 10, 2008 07:44 PM  Permalink

The answer is a big NO! Till the LEFT is 100% destroyed Politically [which is not possible in the near future], nothing can happen in Bengal. Those who have been brainwashed to do STRIKES,HARTALS, GHERAO,SALARY WITHOUT WORK,Violence, etc. for 50 years of their lives cann't be expected to channelise their Energies in a constructive
way even if they want to! Laziness sets in and inclination to hard work will be absent.Only a new generation can save Bengal by bringing in another GORBACHEV.

West Bengal's industrialisation
by BIKAS KUMAR BHADRA on Jun 10, 2008 07:27 PM  Permalink

It was nice to find Mr B saha giving expression to his apprehensions/suggestions from far away Norwich, UK, relating to the current efforts of the WB govt towards accelerating the industrialisation drive undertaken in the state.

The common story doing the rounds even today that the communists opposed or were not enthusiastic about the setting up of industries in the state for the last 30/40 years should be viewed in the backdrop of the systematic deprivation at the hands of the powerful central govt. in granting licences for setting up industries as well as discreetly discouraging prospective enterpreneurs since the mid-50's.

If the general level of consciousness of the people of WB relating to their fundamental rights is a bit high, why should one choose to frown on them? If the workers demand something beyond the capacity of the management of a particular company, the problem can ordinarily be resolved through a process of workers' participation in the management and appropriate negotiations. However, if the central govt thought it fit to teach the people of WB a lesson by stifling the industrial growth for a long period citing labour troubles, could it be regarded a prudent approach? This resulted in the poor utilisation of the vast army of skilled workers which adversely affected the country's GDP for nearly 30 years.

If the state govt overlooked the concerns/sentiments of a section of land owners, the same has to be settled amicably for a bigger cause.

No lamenting is enough for the industrial ruins of Bengal
by Biswajit Ghoshal on Jun 10, 2008 07:26 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

...thanks to it's cadre based CPM rulers over 30 years. The new generation of youths of India see Bengal as a downcaste in industries, education and healthcare. But they will be surprised to know to the extent of disbelief that post-independence, Bengal was leader in India in industries, education and healthcare. The CPM has been very systematic in not allowing any other cader-based party like Janasangha, BJP, Sangha-pariwar into the state. As Cong/TMC don't have the cader-base like CPM, they failed to uproot them. WB is a case of hopelessness and doom in industries, education and healthcare. Any Bengali who can afford, goes to other states for education and healthcare and job. The shamelessness of rulers of WB is simply pathetic. Recently Kolkata became the pollutest city in the country - and the transport and the industries ministers are not even bothered.

You can re-build as many industries as you want.

Unless you control Islamic birth rate and Islamic immigration from Bangladesh, you will end up losing it all to a greater Islamic Bangladesh. Bengal is facing a silent Islamic takeover.
Only those Muslims should be allowed to live in Bengal, who are willing to revert to Hinduism.

It appears that the author has no idea about present West Bengal residing in UK. I have spent 20 years in Calcutta and now in Chennai for 3 years. Any bugger who says the situation in TN is better I will kick at his back.
Who told him that the govt offices in TN is any better. It is much more corrupt than Calcutta. needless to say there is no comparison between personal corruption of politicians where Communists are almost spotless- TN politicians are fooling their people be it absurd real estate price to sky high vegetables and petty labour cost is the highest in the country.
yes - you can see Private High school teachers in TN are earning an apathy figure of Rs.4000 which is less than a cobbler- great honour to education. Mind it you need 50% more spending to be in TN than WB to lead similar lifestyle.
Yes they are successful in blackmailing and snatching (and also shamelessness- note the comment on Rahul Gandhi being next PM) away many good things from the fool Manmohan Singh govt where Left has failed not being a part of UPA.
Mind it I was-am and will be against communists for their party logic but otherwise we have to analyze the facts being at both the places and not sitting in UK.

A very good observation though in short

The author has tried to examine some important problems but why did he choose to overlook the corruption in the bureaucracy and the arrogance of the CPI(M)cadres which has alienated many pro-Left intellectuals. In Tamil Nadu, there was no interference by partymen even when tsunami doles were being given. Can it happen in West Bengal, irrespective of whosoever is in power? There is no work culture at all.We lack the will to work!

Bengal and Communists
by AMIT PAUL on Jun 10, 2008 07:16 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I am a bengali and I also believe Bengal and Industrialization, the two words doesn't really match. The reason behind is that bengalis made a stupid mistake long time back when they brought communist in power. I don't believe bengalis brain is washed by communist. Look around the world where communist rules, it's very tough to get rid of communists once they comes to power. Communist in India are ruling regionally, so educated bengalis have options, i.e leave west bengal. Just visit rural WB, one can easily realize why CPM is in power and why they will continue to win. Bottom line is that bengalis are helpless in front of evil CPM.

You are 100% right Amit. When for 50 Years a virus sweeps a State you dont expect any Productive work/Activity there! The Creative/
constructive, Intellectual BENGALEES had no other alternative, but to leave Bengal! Bangla desh lost its intellectuals during the Liberation War and our Bengalee Intellectuals
were banished to other parts of Ondia and the World by the Indian Communists!

Bengal the Mindset
by deepak on Jun 10, 2008 07:11 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The problem with Bengal is the mindset nurtured under Communists for nearly half a century. It has become anti entrepreneur. Bengalis today fail to grasp the concept of business and somehow related it to imagined fictitious fat dirty profiteers. Blame it on years of intellectual brainwashing thru poems to movies..add to it the irony of brilliance of Mrinal Sen or the tenacity of Jyoti Basu. Bengalis are pathetic, they have become boring and snap at you and barrage you with anti American rhetoric. Bengalis today have risen way above their cultural or ethnic ties. They fancy themselves as world citizens, as victimized proletariat and to that end they even empathize with Islamic terror. Strange breed, the new Bengalis. Communists messed up Bengal, big time.

Deepak, you must be a big time Bengali hater and obviously a Marwari. Being anti-American is not a preqrequisite towards anti-entrepreneur and anti business attitudes. Many Europeans like the French, Italians do not like the US. But they are economically developed and are known for big corporate houses that have their significant presence globally. These countries do not endorse capitalism totally. Yes i agree to some extent with you about Bengalees having a uncomfortable attitude towards entreprenership and business. Yes this blockheadedness should change and Bengalees should inculcate and develop business acumen in them. The lazy, laid back attitudes Bengalees ahould be done away with. As far as the intellect you talk about , i'm sorry to say people like you are extremely incompetent to measure the intellectual level of Bengalees.

Sudipta...regardless of what I am, where is the hate??? Bengal is not France or Italy, competing with US for markets..Bengalis are Anti American simply because it is fashionable and reinforces their Commie leanings. Bengalis lead protests of American bombing in Afghanistan, yet these idiots dont even whimper when their Bengali brethern are thrown out of Bangladesh...Bengalis are strange !
