I still remember that it was Rs.1.25/lire of petrol, minimum Auto fare was Rs.0.50 and the minimum Taxi Fare was Rs.1.25/-in late sixties. The bus fare during my school days was 7np.minimum. Later in 1972 it was 10np. was the minimum bus fare in Madras. See the gallopping rate at which the cost of all has increase. Reason being the India was buying crude oil at Rs.0.50 per barrel. The cost of rice was 10 Anas (67np) per kg of fine Andhra Rice.To this my mother remarked once that it was still costly after were born as they used to buy 3 kg rice for one rupee. In 1967, the then Baktavasalam govt in Tamilnadu fell to DMK due to rice crisis and then Anna Durai, the then CM promised to sell rice at Rs.1 per kg through PDS he lived upto his promise during his life time. I was getting quater ana that is 3np for going to school and all the school books were bought at Rs.3 only. The school fees I remember was paid at Rs.6 per annum and I used to get half fee concession because my father was a govt servant. We were all happy with the meagre income my father was getting eating good food though no lavish spending.I still remember that I bought a shirt piece at Rs.3/meter in late sixties and early seventies. The cinema ticket was sold at 31np minimum and max was Rs.2,50/ People were happy but today we get handsome money, nobody seem to be happy. The entire ration for the month was bought at less than Rs.25/- for a family of six. Mutton was sold at Rs.1.50 per kg and egg was casting 3np.

Very True, Mr.Jamsheed, today we earn a minimum of atleast 1/2 a lac on an average, yet we are pennyless in the month ends and still lead a very unhappy life... this be the result of progress.
