it works in some way or doesn't in other way
by Vinaykumar S. Patil on Jul 01, 2008 12:53 PM  Permalink

I felt that some time counter experience works out. The reason for which you are quitting. might get resolves with in the same org. In IT industry particularly reasons could be onsites, location change, salary ot change of work.. Some time joining in other companies might be it will take time to go for onsite.
Again it depends on lots of if's and but's.And some time it is pure luck person joined other company and he got what he want. I have seen cases sometime people got fooled on expectations.
But my understanding is that, if nothing is getting worked out then go for change but if there is possibility to have the same in current org then first try it and if not then go outside for it.

It Differs
by karthick on Jul 01, 2008 12:49 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

It differs from person to person. Though the article is mostly right there are some points to consider.
The writer is CEO from a executive search firm. So he indirectly lists his problems and an article like this essential to make his job easier.
Also in the example given, when a person cant handle a company in which he has worked for so long and knows the business model cant run it smoothly, how do u expect him to run a mid level company where the challenges will be lot more than an established one and make is successful. A person incapable of excelling in a known environment will hardly be successful in a new environment.
About the plane incident too.. Not all the executives will decide unanimously decide to badn a candidate. It depends on their targets and pressure at that time, particularly in the industry that opearates in "your loss is my gain" model.

your blog is very good... but accepting counter offers does get you in a recruiters bad list and he will remember and spread that for sure...

Thank you. I am sure too that recruiters will rememeber and spread all -ves about you. But thats all they can do to vent out their anger. It may or may not get you into trouble.
But at times like this, when employers badly need employees and too many head hunting agencies out there.. it wont spoil the employees chance a great deal IF he is really capable and has the right skill.

fact is if organisation needs you , the will take you . things might be differnt at entry - middle level at it company, where you are talking abt same technology and skill, employee can be choosy. but in typical FMCG / Consumer durable industry , employer are generally ok with it. No body puts you on bad list . Ya there will be other insatnce also , but generally this is the trend

This is Use CASE and not a Rule :)
by vijay hatewar on Jul 01, 2008 12:04 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The first para talks about a Person who commited faux pass accespting a counter offer. however this cant be a Rule all the time. But In IT industry there are few Golded Rules whic must be followed by all no matter what.

1. never accept counter offer
2. Dont Curse your manager in public.
3. Dont do job hopping :) three years in one company is must .

1) One should upgrade & negotiate with current company rather than having offer and negotiate. It is better not to accept counter offers.
2) yes correct.
3) I don't agree with this. If one gets good work env. and work with benefits in the company he should stay there for long time. Rest no fun in staying at same position. I have seen people join new company to have better exposure in new role or technology and better package to afford better life. Many people with the same company and same project are not easily adaptable to new envorinment, people and technology and becomes lazy/dull sometimes. They become old resources of one project and doesn't get upgraded. also when the same person looks opportunity outside he doesn't have good things in his profile and market always ready to take more competitive and upgraded people with high package because that delivers better solution to customer and demand of the time.

Agreed to first two points. While third point depends on how the company environments is? how does career moves? what are salary structures ?

It Industry or any other industry works on the basis of demand and supply. If you are worth the value you would definately be appreciated.

But in case of you begin in a company for more than 5 years the value decreases as the attitude of company becomes laid back on you.

The company hires people with the most competetive salary in the market and you see that the people with lesser experience are begin paid more even though you have been loyal to the firm for the last 5 years when it did start as a mid size company.

Change is the law of nature and one should change.Getting job is like selling your skills and the person should always look out for the highest bidder(Salary/Stablity/Growth)
