With variable pay component there is never clear picture of Percentage cut
by abbey K on Feb 01, 2008 10:31 PM  Permalink

When TCS increases salaries it increases for highest Rating and not for all. It also ensures that highest rating is not given to many people. All other ratings dont get increase. So in effect average employee never gets hike. In TCS salaries never increase. Any increase happens that is to beat the inflation. This was told by CEO Rama Duai in one of the interviews even. That is why for average employee increment does not happen. So-called high performers who get highest rating get the pie. But that is just applicable for one year. next year again it gos down.
All this happens when TCS tells market that it increaed salary. Then imagine what happens when TCS tells media that salaries are down. TCS top brass is good at manipulating data and fooling emloyees. But rediff has been always supportive of TCS

TCS SALARY CUT
by VENKATARAMAN RAMACHANDRAN on Feb 01, 2008 09:53 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

There is nothing wrong in exercising such an option when the Company is feeling that their payroll is becoming bigger when the margins are deteriorating. As a matter of fact, the inefficient HR professionals had opted for very high salaries for the software professionals, on the pretext of retaining the talents; there are various ways to retain the talents, arrest attritions and develop loyalty and involvement of the staff in the organisations. The present step of TCS will encourage other software cos also to resort to such an action, which will bring the salary structures to reasonable level. This will encourage employees to move to other professions also, resulting in an overall development of salaries for all types of professionals, which will have a better future for India.

there is no truth in this . it is determined by demand supply . nobody can "fix" software developers's salary . indian companies have to compete with MNCs to retain talent. high salary is just one part of the solution

But there is also a perception of what is 'reasonable' as determined by the market.

MNCs have hire and fire policy, which many Indian companies are not comfortable with. So, salaries cannot be part of the solution.

TCS salary cut is 19.5 % not 1.5%
by on Feb 01, 2008 09:19 PM  Permalink

TCS management once again lied to media. For the betterment of company, they need to fire all the top bosses who are rubbing the seats for past 30 years. They are the biggest overheads to the company, none of them are charismatic and engage in all unethical practices

by on Feb 01, 2008 09:17 PM  Permalink

TCS lied to media saying just 1.5%, when it was actually 19.5%. All these top management fools must be fired, to run the company better. They are the real overheads, rubbing the seats for last 30 years or more

by vinay kumar singh on Feb 01, 2008 09:17 PM  Permalink

Ambiguity of TCS EVA process
by poosarla srinivas on Feb 01, 2008 09:07 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Firstly, i will agree to the notion that if company is not doing good, employees have to bear the burden of it.
My concern here is, TCS never publishes what is its EVA expectations. so, essentially, you dont no what is the company projected EVA and how is it planning to achieve it. This gives the scope for manipulations.
How can some one trust a company who says that they have made profits to market and says that they have not met the targets internally and calling for pay cuts.

democracy at work
by programmer on Feb 01, 2008 08:07 PM  Permalink

when company performs well it pays us well and in time . when profit margin hurts it has to reduce the salary of its employees . we as employees have to accept this reality . india is a democratic country . nobody will stop us to start our own company . if we are employee we are at the mercy of employers . we have to accept the cut in salary . more companies to follow TCS as example

Well TCS is another indian company, who dont care much about employees. All they care is money. TCS makes employees work 12-12 hours at client site. TCS offers minimum insurance for employees at USA. No extra facility is given by TCS. At India also TCS managers just work to save there seat and do not care about employees.

What are the good things TCS has done
by N Meher Prasanna on Feb 01, 2008 05:39 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

While there is a lot of criticism on this move by TCS..one should not forget that this was the company which has never laid off an employee even during the 2002-3 software crisis. The company has not yet gone the route of firing employees. One feels safe with such a company and perhaps wouldn't mind getting a few bucks less and still have a great amt of flexibility of working in myraid technologies/countries etc. Talk also about the good things the company has done folks !!!What you are seeing is more a downstream effect of the US slow down, appreciating Rupee, the sub prime crisis. Live with it...I work for an MNC in the US always in fear that I maybe fired tomorrow..not because, I am not doing well..but because the company may not be doing very well..Consider yourself fortunate if you are working for TCS !!! - NMP

I was in Patni !! Every person, who has worked in Big 5 knows, that they accept the variable pay as a part of pay package. If company does well, they get that pay after the quarter. If company does not fare well ( Qtr on Qtr ), then the variable pay is not given. Simple as that..Did rediff ever report, that since last 10 years, the same IT guys were given 120% to 140% variable pay, bcos, the companies did well..
I mean, suppose a person has accepted 5k per month as variable pay during joining. In 3 months, his variable pay is 15K if company achieves targets !! If company exceeds targets, then he may get 18-20k ( i.e. ~120% of what he was expecting )..Does rediff ever report this ??

Where are you dude?? Gone are the days .. TCS kicks employee out in a different manner .. And these days people are asked to resign even .. Better not to comment without knowing details !!

What Debajyoti says is very true. I have personally known people kicked out just like that and I have worked for TCS HR.

Considering the comments of HA, nowhere in the history of TCS has anyone got 140% increase etc. It is the most poorly paid software organization and it is rare that salaries in TCS really go up.

TATA ethics are just on paper. Just ask Gopi Vedachalam who has filed a case against TCS and ask those who reposed trust in Tata Finance.

Very True! It has removed many employees. It is just a cheap sweat shop which cannot be trusted.
All its talk of ethics and high morals fall flat on its face. The company cannot hoodwink its own employees for long. I personally feel it is a highly hyped and pretentious company. It should stop making noises about ethics etc and come clean on its policies if it is serious of making any headway in this competitive world.

have your own website . its the only way . freelancing sites drive prices ridiculously down. you have to spend $50 dollars per year for a good website . research yourself. be choosy in customers selection . deliver in time
