Its simple, they hired people because they thought they would get more of them billable to client. Now they are reducing the salaries so that some of the costs can be saved because they do not need so many employees now (because of recession in US). Whoever leaves is added benefit. Its like supply staying the same and demand decreasing - the prices(wages) will drop and vice versa.
The strategy adopted by TCS management is a tried and tested one. This strategy is recorded in the history of TCS back in 2003, before going public. The salary were cut then and now too.
The only reason I could see that Tata group is facing liquidity issues to raise money for huge acquisitions like Corus, Jaguar or implementing projects like Tata Nano and others in pipeline.
Indian IT companies have pampered their people no end. Compare a Ph.D in Biochemistry working with a pharma lab with a Software Engineer. The former gets less than fourth of latter's salary. I am myself associated with the IT industry for last 15 years and I have also earned good money in these companies. However, truth is truth. Salaries in IT and ITeS need to get rationalized.

Salary in IT is over-hyped....because of this hype in IT cities the product/services have become more expensive as everyone is ready to fleece.....so there is no "REAL" increase in salary...
Also...please check the salary in medicine, Banking , insurance, ...they are much more...but not hyped..

To all guys who pound on IT employees for getting more salary should think twice before saying such thing. You know why they are paying such huge amount, because the companies know very well after 5 to 10 years of service most of these IT employees will have to spend their hard earned money to live in this world fighting against all those illnessess acquired during all these years. Check with the number of depression patients in India and also the increase in diabetics among youths particulary the IT people. In 2 to 3 years there will be an outbreak of diseases to all these guys and then you will feel sorry for scolding them. It is my personal experience. I have seen many people leaving our company after 32 or 33 because of health reasons. Think wisely guys.
I think the issue has been misinterpreted here.It is a salary cut for employee who were stupid enough to believe that VARIABLE component is FIXED..The company just intended to give a heads-up information to its employee that the earning growth does not allow them to declare 100% bonus ( for the company part). Cmon rediff, dont put such misleading headline as you generally do for a filmi gossip...
