Do we have road maps .....for navigation help
by Sebastian A on Jan 12, 2008 03:40 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

India is a IT hub...but we dont have any web tools to search and find the roads on places in our major cities.....

Even small countries in Europe have these facilities and tools.... we are still living in old times asking some one on the road about the roads and junctions.....

Imagine a case where you are stuck somewhere and you dont know where you are and want to find the quickest way to another place. How do you use Google maps to find your route?

GPS in your car always knows where you are (sattelite connection permitting) at any instant, so all one needs to know where he wants to get to.

Don't forget mate, that India effectively started from scratch only 60 yrs back post independence. don't expect it to catch up with the world on everything.

Dear Sir,
we are not living in old times anymore. If you have mobile set which has a GPS locator and a GPRS connectivity then you can get your location, road maps, directions very easily. You can see your cars` velocity also. Nokia N95 supports it.

Its old technology for Europe
by Shailesh Sompal Singh on Jan 12, 2008 03:10 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Europeans are enjoying this facility since 1997 but this is not quite accurate I am struck many time following the GPS systems direction; but then again it is smart move; only thing we have to consider is its cost; the cheapest version costs around 250 Euro = 14,000 Rs quite affordable.

When did the GPS failed to satisfy you Shailesh. I am using TOM TOM since 2002 and I never had to miss a junction. You would need to check your settings....major mistakes occur while selecting the shortest route or fastest reaching time option....first make sure you got your options right and then go for a TOM TOM not any NAVMAN stuff which are a piece of rubbish...

Oh Hello. its not free....actually the device has to be connected to some device which can communicate with the satellite ... Probably your cell phone.. so you shall either have to connect the device to your phone or there will be a GSM kit to insert the sim into.. :).. and you shall have to pay monthly rent for the sim...

Dude, there is no need for SIM card for GPS. You are confusing GPS with GSM mobile service.

GPS service is absolutely free except for the initial cost of the device and cost for getting the map software and updates. Once you have these, you can use it for free for as long as you want.

The satellite service is free for all, given by the US government.

Parichay, there is no cost for GPS, the main cost is of the device, maps and major map updates. Initially there will be some problems but once the maps get better it will work more than satisfactorily.

There is no cost for GPS service. It is provided by the United Stated government and it is free for civilian use around the world.
But higher accuracy service is reserved for the US military.

GPS in ahmedabad possible, Nokia N958GB ..its free (Gps)
by Shivam Parikh on Jan 12, 2008 03:05 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Dont forget the N95 8GB! Ive been using it and its GPS system (With the added Ahmedabad/India download map) pack and it works great. Sadly signal of gps starts only after you drive for about a minute , but once it kicks in - it works great. Very happy with the amazing updated maps - it showed almost all roads (even the small lanes through societies). I am impressed with the entire system.

Shivam, if you update satellite positions regularly, you should get a faster satellite fix.

Hi Yusuf,
How can you update hte satellite positions???Im just wondering....You need to have a contact with atleast 4 satellites to give a precise location of your device...more the satelites you are connected more accurate your position will be.
You need to start moving only then satellite recognises which direction your car is going towards....satellites cannot find the direction of your car when it is parked....
