Govt should make a rule that in cities with high traffic at high rush hours a car should have atleast half the no of people of its full capacity. This way people will travel in two wheelers when going to office. Or else will give lift to other people so that the load on public transport will decrease. Nobody will take a big car on road when only one person has to travel.
Ratan has proved to the world what he is .........just another GEM indian ....every talks about ambani but the point here is Ratan r Tata group always give scope the middle class people then do something bigger.......they prove to the world from their first production to till now...they proved
Tata has done a wonderful job and vision to have a middleclass family a car is highly appreciable. By this thing automobile market will boom up. Now higherend car manufacturers will think about pricing of the cars. This is victory of consumers at the end.
By stating that the success of software industry in India is purely contingent upon the value of the rupee and cheap availability of programmers in India, the author has got it wrong. If cost was the only criterion, then how is it that even in software product development companies in the west, Indians far outnumber people from all other countries?? Surely there is more than economics that is at work behind the Indians doing well in software.
The NANO will take over the Auto market. If it is this Cheap! then the Auto will be replaced by NANO. This will be the BEST TAXI!! "NANO CAB" 2 years back when i was thinking of buying a Hatch back- My said a Resounding NO to Tata Indica as it is a Taxi.. Wonder wa will happen to NANO..

Hey Shiju... Spot on. They have an eye on the auto market as well...maybe thats why one of the variant was in Yellow. LOL ;-)
i was seeing the varius news reports yesterday. no doubt that 1 lac is something very achievable for many of us. the only hard truth is that that "many" come under the middle class (not counting the lower). for example, take me. i'm an average earning person and i can save about a 1000 bucks every month. so to amass the required amount for my small car desire, i'd have to save this money for 100 months. assume income average appreciation then this might reduce to about 72 months. that's a waiting of six years! imagine even lower middle class families desiring cheap cars for their affordability. now where's india heading to?
i still believe that powerhouses like tata and bajaj should consider coming out with 350 cc cars with a ceiling of 50,000 - 60,000. only then would the genuine "common man" gain from such corporate ventures.

hmmmm u seem to be very happy with your income. who is stopping you from becoming a man who can save 10000 every month in place of 1000? so rather than expecting a 350cc car from bajaj and tata (and then finding faults) do something with your life dude!

If you have to wait for 6 long years to buy Nano then in simple words, though it may sound harsh, you don't deserve it. Car is going to need lots of other things too besides the automobile hardware. Like maintenance, running cost in terms of fuel and so on. Will you be able to afford it then?? Oh and by the way that magic figure of 1 Lakhs is an ex-showroom price. With taxes and other charges it will cost around 1.25 lakhs. That means 2 years more according to your calculations!
What are we supposed to do!make a statue of Sir.Ratan Tata and pray to him.Just imagine this car being peddled like a bike.Where are you going to get roads for these cars to be driven on.Every tom dick and harry will get a one lakh finance fromI----Bank.If those guys don't pay the bank will grab it back and the way we see bikes piled up at their auctions tata will see their cars piled up. the best thing will be one gentle bang by a bullet and for the driver it's curtains.Good! India does not have to worry about population explosion!Trust tata to take care of that.Maybe they'll even sell them Insurance from Tata-Aig.

Mr. Murli... great response... but do u understand that TATA is not responsible for population growth. and infrastructure part.. when Maruti 800 was luanched did we have good roads ? Govt reacts only when they have excessive pressure from public. Let the Nano come to roads then, the govt will respond. The way u r commenting makes me think u want to cut of ur head if u have a got a headache.

........and think positively like think if a car could be bought free with Rs. 50,000 and five gallons of petrol as gift with it. Imagine you could travel from Mumbai to Ludhiana on this junk with a speed of 100kmph (God forbid! to Ludhiana and not to heaven!)and after five gallons of petrol (free) are exhausted, it starts runing on water.

Tata makes Cars and not ROADS ask your govt to make roads if and when it wakes up. And people like you have lot of practice carrying useless politicians on your heads including The heavy duty Ambassador cars.Stay there, drive an ambassador car dont change!!!

you are the people who want that every tom, dick and Harry should not have a simple car but their bosses should have many big cars.
Dont you think big cars clog the roads?
Do you think tha Every Tom, Dick and Harry should travel on scooter with his wife and children and the rich people should Drive away in cars comfortably.

It is not the cheap car that is to be appreciated. It is the spirit behind it-the spirit which tells the world that Indians can dream what others feared to dream and also achieve that dream. This is going to motivate a lot of young Indian engineers and managers to explore new aveneues and succeed in building a highly skilled talent pool.

What an ability to foresee financial impacts and future - Hey you are needed in finance ministry.
I will suggest finance ministers of all countries should form a forum and you should lead it - your advise is needed to each country.
lucidly written article. The key message is competing on capability, not just resources. The Nano will have a similar impact on the car industry as the Ford Model T did a century back.
