You are right when you say that the farmer must get his dues, But do you realise that writing of the farmers debts is just a election gimmick to secure votes , the main cause of concern must be the alloctation of various expenditures which must reach the benefactories correctly and not get pocketed in the way. As the late prime minster said that only 5% of the money reaches the poor the practice is still the same... assuring that transperency comes into force and common man is paid via coupons or direct debit into account should be the piroirity of the goverment if this is in force the divide between the have and the have nots gets eliminated faster paving the way for a more vibrant economy in future.

Please do not give subsidy to farmers. Any subsidy reduces the inherent strength of the system and weaker system develops over time. That is what has happened to the farmers. Instead, give remunerative proces for the farm products. Why government is collecting sugar, for example, at lower rate from sugar mills and then subsidizing the farmers? Its taking money from the sugar mills and giving to farmers. Inturn the government machinery misuses the funds.

Good suggestion Sebastian , I agree. The Indian farmer is exploited by one and all - Govt , politiciians , middlemen , consumers -- and he is slogging throughout his life. Till all of us realize this point , whehther we are doing business or working in towns and cities and start paying more money to farmers , the 60 crore Indians will find it difficult to make both ends meet.
It is a wonderful suggestion , sensible and I strongly support this cause. Let us start paying 5% to 10% more for all farm produce and it is Govt"s duty to ensure this money reached the farmer. It could be the ultimate solution to all the travails and troubled of farmers and peasants in India.
GREAT JOB , SEBASTIAN.
