Bangalore's new airport
by Swaminathan Murthy Murthy on Feb 25, 2008 09:31 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Sorry to sound a little spoilsport, but all is not hunky dory about the new airport, atleast for middle class passengers. The airport is 35 kms. away and no ordinary taxis - Indica V2, Omni Van, Ambassadors - are allowed. Only Indigo and above. The fare you pay to reach the airport for a family would be more than the fare u pay to reach another domestic destination, say, Mumbai, Kolkata. To reach the highway from the airport u got to cover 7 kms. The airports in Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi are accessible by bus, taxi, even auto, in Chennai by train too - the station is right opposite to the airport. The project to run a train service to the airport with facility to book the baggage at the station itself has been given up - now they say they would charge Rs.200 per passenger for the service, when it does come about. The taxi lobby in cahoots with the private promoters are out to fleece the public. I see nothing to celebrate here. If the airport is meant only to impress the foreigners and no ordinary cars are to be allowed, will u alter ur entire cities and the slums and ordinary buildings along the way? banish any citizen clad in dhoti and banian from sight?

they y papers and news channels are not showing this . the whole point here in writing this is that news channels and sites like rediff are misguiding people by giving these kind of biased data, i used to like rediff a lot but looks like
now rediff has hired all ignorent people who seem to be biased to the city they belong

Bangalur/Hyderabad airports.
by Lilamber Joshi on Feb 25, 2008 09:09 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

In next three years these will need modifications.Cud the authority decide whether these airport will last next twenty years and cater to the air traffic.Look what happened to IGI Delhi, commissioned just 20 yrs. back and choking now.Look at Mumbai airport. Compare these with only domestic airports of USA or even China and see the difference.Came back from USA just two days back and cud'nt find a toilet paper rool in IGI Delhi on arrival.Shame on Indian airports. In addition look at the tardy and pot bellied cops and custom people.India shud learn a lesson from Dubai,Bangkok,Beijing,Hongkong and other Asian airports(What to talk about European/US/Canadian airports).Look at these airports and see how they clean and maintain them compared to sparrows and pigeon nests in the deperture lounge of IGI.Show off atleast where it is required as the first impression of the countries the tourists visit.

REDIFF BIASING
by sparshcom ltd on Feb 25, 2008 08:50 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Is rediff decided only to promote bangalore? Infact Hyderabad's airport too ready to start ahead of bangalore's . But why is there no news coverage about hyderabad's airport which is bigger than bangalore airport and already finished the trial run very well before and which was constructed on world standards ? I hope rediff will take care of this.

by ashwin ms on Feb 25, 2008 09:06 PM  Permalink
Dude, Why r u taking so personal - relax. Bangalore is the first city to have a greenfield airport concept in the country and if u follow the storyline, it took 15-20 years to get our politicians to do that.
Hyderabad definitely benefited from the Bangalore experience. The Civil Aviation ministry had very little to do in Hyderabad's case because they only had to follow Bangalore model.
Now , its the promoter's efficacy that they managed to complete 15 days before this one. But we need to appreciate both developers!
Do not make it Bangalore Vs Hyderabad issue. In fact India needs many more greenfield airports like these, so that we can get rid of shabby AAI ( by the way they are already planning a strike)!

Safety of Passengers to and from the airport
by SATYA KUMAR on Feb 25, 2008 08:47 PM  Permalink

We are happy to have an International standard airport - there will be teething problems which will be taken care of as time goes.

The point of concern is unlike the present airport where people to and from the airport travel thru the city and it is very safe at any given time be it day or mid-night or very early morning.

With the new airport being outside the city - the greatest worry will be the SAFETY of the people moving to and from the airport on the highway between the airport and hebbal.

There could be anti-social elements who will use this route to harass people taking advantage of the poorly lit roads between the two points.

The government should ensure the safety of passengers moving to and from the airport at all times. They have to come-up with an action plan for safety of people before the airport starts operation as many a time women and children travel on their own, and their safety along with their belongings must be taken-care of by all concerned.

Now all Bangalore needs is a metro / underground railway to sort out its traffic jams. Bangalore's roads must be widened and autobahn style flyovers ought to be constructed as well. Congrats Bangaloreans! Bangalore is well on its way to becoming a truely world class city!
