The only way the whole generation can be uplifted is by strengthening our primary and secondary school infrastructure. IITs and IIMs can only accomodate a few thousands of people. What about the rest crores.
Every government believes in taking shortcuts by giving reservations and opening more IITs and IIMs. It craetes a lot of hype and gives the goct good amount of publicity.
But what is required is much more hard work in the rural areas to provide basic education to all so that society as a whole can uplift.
"President said, ". . . our farmers are affected by floods, drought, pests, lack of infrastructure and low yields as compared to the rest of the world. While many of these areas are specialized, nevertheless, IIT engineers have a duty to the nation to produce cutting edge solutions for our rural areas."
Considering the competance of IITs, I feel that it will take another 150 years for India to become self reliant in all these areas of developing new technologies. For instance, IIT has got the world class the civil engineers and scientists. However, if you see the condition of IIT Buildings and infrastructure, one would say that even the NITs and private engineering colleges are much better. For instance, due to quota implementation, there is severe shortage of accommodation for students as well as faculty. The kind of accommodation offered is really pathetic. The quality of construction in most of the hostels and faculty accommodations is really pathetic. The construction quality done by illiterate workers in rural areas is much better than that done under the supervision of world class scientists and engineers. Most of the IIT buildings seep during the rainy season. The construction of house floors is really terrible. The progress of construction of new building is in really bad shape. Therefore, if the president think that she will ask IITians to build rural infrastructure and serve the country. It is better to forget that part.
This is all we can expect from the so called president. If she wants IITians to come up with solutions for rural problems, she has no idea what research means. The only and the surest way to overcome rural problem is removal of corruption, obviously she has to take the lead in doing that and not IITs. As the saying - charity begins at home - goes, first she should try to be clean and non-corrupt. As a first step I request her to clear all the allegations that are there against her of her involvement in some bank cases.
It only goes on to show her naivety in understanding research. Researcher's usually try to advance a field; in many cases it takes a while before the research ideas become practical solutions to problems. It is amazing to see how little idea this person has about research. No wonder India's research output is no where compared to even China, we borrow all technologies and decomissioned ships from russia paying billions of dollars.

Exhorting is also doing something. At least she is 'recommending'/'advising'. Ur reply only shows ur 'arrogance'.
49% seats are reserved by ur self proclaimed backward classes.
in the rest 51%, 40% get sick of IIT and its pathetic teaching culture.
In the remaining 11%, 10% go abroad.
I must admit the remaining 1% try there best to do something for the country but you keep on slapping us by imposing reservations and restrictions in the name of academic welfare.
Go lick Arjun singh's reserved ssa.
Gandhi family did not do one thing... rename IIT's to RIT or JIT or (newone) MIT Maino institute of technology.

Our haggard politicians just wait for alms from NRI's.They are just dependent on foreigh exchange inflows from NRI's.NRI's should stop sending money to India,on the other hand they should be loyal to the country they live in.LN Mittal [Mittal Steel] or A Agarwal {Vedanta Resources] would not have been able to reach where they are if they hadnot contributed to the economies of the countries they are residing in.Everyone will start contributing to India, only after they are assured there money will not go on to meet the luxuries of corrupt Indian politician and few billionaires who have political connections.Until that even Indians living in India should stop paying taxes to the Govt.

IITians are IITians (whether it is 20% or 200% successful) remaining all are non-iitians. IITians cannot be compared with anyone in the world

why dont we make a rule so that selection is based on the population share of every cast. Let the merit go to trash.

Why are you upset with Caste? It is very very important part of your life. You are born into it and you die in it! Or, you are happy with the caste so far it works in your favour but it becomes a bad thing the moment people start demanding justice?

I don't know why upper castes get upset with reservations ( myself included ) . a donkey studying in IIT remains a donkey. Merit or talent is the only way people succeed. Please remember only 20% of the IITians can be called successful in life and those talented guys who did not get into an IIT went to NIT or local college succeed better than 80% of IIT grads if they are talented.

"not failure but low aim is a crime." If Nehru has lived by his words, then this is how he succeeded.... 1,He succeeded in making people believe that his family only can run both Congress and country. 2,He succeeded in keeping most of Indians well below poverty line. 3,He succeeded in keeping people divided in as many ways as possible in the name of religion, region, caste, sex, etc...
