absolutely ridiculous..our children need good environment and basic necessities and not laptops for education.. if basic necessities are provided then each neem tree and peepul tree can impart more wisdom in a child than the laptop crap could do.
I may be old-fashioned, but what children need are not laptops and other fancy educational aids. What they need are colorful, attention catching books, airy well-lit classrooms, hygienic food, clean toilet facilities and above all highly motivated teachers. Provide these basics of education and you will see illiteracy vanish from the face of India within a generation. You cannot expect children who do'nt know where the next morsel of food is coming from to stay focussed on their laptops.

Very correct Manoj. Why such schools, I was a student at one of the premier colleges of Mumbai, and not once in three years there did I enter the toilet and found water available. So one can only imagine the condition of some non-decrepit school in some remote corner of India. In fact, such is the lack of intelligence among our education officials that premier exams such as the IAS and others are held at centres where there are no basic sanitation facilities. How can one be expected to do well in such cases, especially considering the problems that women face? To top it all, when I appeared for the IAS interview at Dholpur House in Delhi, there were no toilet facilities there. Can you beat that? This is India, where such grandiose plans have often failed. Anyway, who knows, let's see, if this OLPC scheme works well, then all the good for India. But focus on the basics first.

Manoj, there are some schools where every child has these laptops.. they are deprived children but you should see what they can do.. in some of them i find that slum children develop better common sense than the kids going to the expensive public shools.. may be there is something to it.. why close your mind?

Yes, surely, nicholas would be minting money on that too, or for new replacements in schools where it is made compulsory. That is the greatness of privatization of education. A loptop becomes more important than a decent toilet.
some people would be making profit out of it. If you are so much bothered, do things:
1. Good teachers 2. Good toilets
in every school, children dont need access to a laptop at such a small age when they dont have access to a good toilet. THe need of the hour is good teachers and good toilets

Hi Ann A, May Alerjee is right. The toilets may be in really bad shape. It's OK for boys but for girls i think it will be nightmare..
What i think is, we need basic amenities and mid-day-meal. May 1 laptop for 5 or even 10 children is fine.

Mr test i dont deny what both of you are saying what i mean is the statement itself is kind of strange as if you are talking about teachers and toilets in the same breath which is not sounding good

why presume? that's easy to find out.. its a not for profit and the kind of money one can make, will hardly interest its rich backers.. yes, everything must improve.. but nothing changes the world faster and better than knowledge.. these laptops can make them more knowledgeable, skilled, prepared to face the world and teh rest will follow..
unless the Babus become less corrupt. Not just me, the supreme court of India has said even god can not save this country!!!
Lalu, Mulayam, Mayawathi, Sonia, Karat, Advani, Karunanidhi, Jayalalitha - are you listening? You people have spoilt this country.
It is because of some educated and honest people like Kalam ( and many others like him) India is still surviving, otherwise it would have been just like africa or worse

I too fully agree with ur veiw that Politicians are the spoilsports of our Country. Baring one or two (eg Abdul Kalam)rest are interested in self-developement rather than developing our country. Its a disgrace that even after 53 years of freedom we cannot provide our population with 2 square meals a day, proper drinking water, sanitation or electricity.Even cities like mumbai do not have adequate infrastructure to support the existing population. Really Even GOD can't save our nation !! Unless something happens to all this dirty minded politicians no progress can be acheived.

I really agree with you. but r we doing anything to eliminate the corruption. We are the same people who offer bribes for our works to be done. On Voting dates have we abstain from voting these corrupt politicians???? No we happily voted them. Our young geneX is more educated, professional, dyanamic but are there any body amoung us who wants to be politician & clean up the system. No Nobody. because we love to watch the game from distance but nobody wants to get involved. The real solution for all these things in our hands only. Come join the politics (ofcourse something different from today) ,clean up all these mess, build our society as we like.Merely discussing will not solve these problems.
