A true Indian. No wonder we have so few scientists in India.
Person you are talking is a NRI. So you can believe him.

Kapil and Yogi, I wonder why you want paint in same color all the time. Firstly, Prof. Majumdar is one of the most respected scientist in the world. So dont compare him with Pillai. Secondly, he is not talking of PV cells (they require light and not heat to operate). He is talking about devices working on thermoelectric effect. The science is known for years, but the economics is not there due to the power density of these devices. With the upcoming nano-fabrication technology, it will be possible to increase the energy density of these devices and thus making them viable. And finally, yes Indian like you do not have the scientific temperament...thats why no one believes Indians. People like you would opt for jobs in crappy IT domain, and think that you are some kind of intellectual. I assure you that all the IT that you do, is what the US people look down upon and do not want to do that work. So, grow up!

Mr.Kapil.Your statement betrays your level of education. It seems you simply do not have an idea about Science.Comparing Mazumdar with pillai is like comparing Einstein with yourself.Got it.

Exploring all possibilities to save the mankind from energy crisis in future is of utmost important. necessity makes inventions obvious. use of electricity is becoming more and more costlier day by day because of the production and transmission loss. as it is said in the article, if the loss could be prevented then it gives enough hope to solve crisis. above all under indian conditions, any idea can be put to use only if there is a political will. The political system started dividing indians by language, region and religion. while people are good, there is lack of political will to share water and other resources.

All these guys just want publicity and would do anything to achieve that.... Tell me honestly what are these guys doing... the fact is nothing.. living happily from the grants given by Universities.. are they actually generating any revenue to the country... no no way at allllll... after few years they would dump this project saying "Well Tried" & "Good Attempt" and they will not stop there, they would go ahead and say "The day is not far when Man will power everything"...... This is ridiculous and only our Tax money is wasted

you are partially correct. there are two groups of people. because of one group science is developed. another group uses science for their development. the latter come up in their career by shortcut methods. they use these type of tactics to "satisfy" high places to go up. unfortunately these people are also proclaimed as scientists in india. the recent pay commission benefits will also go to these people. one interesting point is they constitute 80% of the scientific community.

You have no idea what science has done to our lives. The internet that you use today is also a outcome of reseach done in these universities. If you feel that money is wasted in science and technology development, then please dont use the products coming out of the industries. No market, no research (very simple).

Dear Manickam,
Your views on the issue & the debate thereof are perhaps the best & rightly put. It's because of the short-sighted take on any new idea which most Indians such as Mangesh Desai are good at, that results in most bright Indians landing up on foreign shores after having given up on the pessimist attitude of most Indians.

All talk .. No substance ..

Last year rediff had article on Car running on water.

News articles talking about technical possibilities are pretty useless.

Some Scientists only talk things.
They never do a damn thing in their life.

Barking dog never bites.
Book writing scientist never does any product in real life.

Mr Premkumar,

Every new breakthrough idea looks stupid at startup. 30 years back who thaught that everybody will be keeping phone in pocket ad computer in hand. If you donot understand science then it is better not make comments??

Sir... Please look back at History... who said hand phone could not have been introduced 30 years ago.. it was not done purposefuly... the so called CDMA technology was used in World War 2 itself... what are you talking about Science... when did electricity actually come.. 200 years ago... this world is Multi Million years old and human beings have been living for millions of years now.... All this so called science is pure crap and waste of money... across the world so much money is being wasted in this so called science which generates no direct revenue.... Look at the amount of money we waste in Defence and astronomy... Let us feed people yaar... there are so many who are dying of Hunger... let us look at ground reality rather than appreciating these so called glorified useless scientists

Feeding hungry people does not get any return. They will only blame you that food is not very tasty. Investing in science will get you returns. Why do you think US is a economic super power. It is their technology and military. It came from these wasteful investment in astronomy.

You are forgetting one most important things. Till hundred year back there were hardly 1 billion humans. Now we are 6 billion. And they all the surviving pretty decently. All because of science. The hunger that you are talking was there 100, 1000, lac years back also. If you see all the history, the world is relatively more peaceful and less hungry that it was in old ages. And all because science. Remember you existence is because of science. What you wrote is because of science. If you don't like science please don't use internet. You are at mercy of science remember. In way science is some incarnation of god (if god exists), please respect that.
