Does this doctor do anything ?
by G A on Apr 10, 2008 08:39 PM  Permalink

This fraud doctor from assam, a nominated PM, just loves to talk and talk and give sermons. Can he tell us what he has done in 4 years to oncrease food grains, what has he done in irrigation, what has he done in agri reforms ? Absolutely nothing, he is just a big zero. He
has only increased taxes on salaried people.

Spurt in food prices can seriously hurt us: Manmohan????

1. you can reserve food for OBCs.
2. you can lose sleep over traitors having food in australia.
3. you can continue to tax medical expenses of senior citizens to feed people.
4. you are anyway increasing salaries of govt employees who do not work and earn under the table instead.

Waking up now?
by Thing on Apr 10, 2008 08:09 PM  Permalink

I guess the PM and his team is waking up now. Since 2 years there have been indications of what's to come on the food front. On top of it you have an agriculture minister who is more interested in cricket and making money and making some stupid statements on farmers committing suicide.

Mr Singh India's food security will come If you have the guts to Introduce Private Sector with Marginal farmers in a Co operative patrren
by ASHOK on Apr 10, 2008 08:03 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Marginal farmers do not have a technology / resources as well as Knowledge to increase yield.
In case Indian political parties ( UPA or NDA)
make a frame work and encourage private sector to join hands ( such as Reliance / Birla / Tata)
with a large groups of Marginal farmers and use their Land with assured minimum returns to farmers ( base level) and enhanced returns depending upon Economic climate ( Much like Mutual funds >>> Risk & Rewards ) Things will move.

Otherwise keep on doling out freebies / loan waiver / colr tv and what not >>. Nothing will happen >> You will not get a Bushel extra

this may actually be a good idea.
The farming sector has immense potential for returns. With knowledge and technology, risk is also largely mitigated.

the Pm is out of his mind
by raj on Apr 10, 2008 07:52 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

on one hand he says in the energy policy to make 10% of the fuel to be biofuel - and world over con prices have shot up due to farmers selling all their corn to biofuel plants. the result is worldover price rise in corn. in india they might argue that the 10% biofuel will come from jatropha - but thats hardly the sae - the most likely source will be sugar - ethanol. jatropha will only be a facade.

these days the farmers are smart. the moment there's a slight fluctuation - they can hoard, sell it at a later date, or sell it abroad for a better price. the futures are not helping either - too much speculation just keeps the price high forever.

on this backdrop - if the PM after knowing all this - if he continues with the 10% biofuel plan its sheer madness.

You are probably talking of the "smart" trader not smart farmer. Farmer cannot afford to hoard :-)

spurt in food prices
by Cedric Lynch on Apr 10, 2008 07:51 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Instead of taking food to make biofuels we should be using much less fuel. India already leads the world in vehicle energy-efficiency (world's biggest cycle industry, the 100km/litre motorcycle, the 30km/litre 10-passenger "chhakada", the 5km/litre full-size bus) but there is pressure from sections of the media to throw away this advantage and copy the disastrous lead of the Americans and Europeans.
I would suggest for a start on even further improvement: (1)Formally legalise the carrying of more than two people on a motorcycle; there is no evidence that it is particularly dangerous, and it will be safer and more comfortable if the manufacturers can provide proper seats and footrests for three or four people;
(2)Exempt from most of the type-approval, registration and licensing formalities any vehicle that is solar-powered and can be demonstrated to be capable of running at least 20km every day without plugging in or using any fuel. Some "experts" believe that this is impossible, and some people in the car and oil industries would like everyone to believe that it is impossible-don't let them stand in the way!
(3) Require all new air-conditioning installations in buildings to be solar-powered;
(4) Make satellite-TV companies delete the contract clause requiring the decoder to be switched on all the time; if every household in India gets one then at 28 watts each it would need two Dabhol Power Stations going flat-out to keep them all on standby.

exactly. we are being driven towards more cars, when it should be less cars, more public transport.

only one thing can reduce fuel consumption - PUBLIC TRANSPORT. as much as possible - public transport. but the irony in india is that we have a bad infrastructure - bad roads, less buses, trains.
