why only bangalore? In chennai wonderful avenues with trees are being made barren in the name of making flyovers to ease traffic congestion. You create a monster of a problem and then find ways to keep it alive ...

Way to go Bangalore
by Preeti Vikram on Sep 25, 2007 08:48 PM  Permalink

Alas!!My favourite city Bangalore is dying. I still remember my younger days when I lived and studied in Bangalore with my home in Basavangudi. I used to walk to my school and college on the Ramakrishna Mission road. Those days we never had to use a motor vehicles since the air was very clean and pure and we breathed fresh air.Bangloreans preffered to walk OR cycling.Bangalore everywhere was a clean and green city and envy of other cities.

BLR has been spoilt totally by the IT industry. BLR had big manufacturing industries but there was never any pollution since the big industries had their own transport system and people seldom used their own vehicles.Nowadays it is an insult to travel by public transport OR company buses and staff travel in their own vehicles. This has added to vehicular pollution.

I also remember the drive from Hosur to Bangalore where we used to visit our relatives. It was a beautiful drive.

Als!! I weep for Banglore. My heart bleeds whenever I visit them during it India visits.

With the present set of city planners, I do not see much hope for BLR.God bless BLR and its citizens OR should I say netizens.

Too much importance to any city gives more problem
by Indoamerican on Sep 25, 2007 08:27 PM  Permalink

This is a good example for what happens if too much importance is given in any way to only one. In this case IT. People say crazily about the IT and bangalore. Fools dont understand what happens if all the IT engineers breath and shit in Bangalore alone.
So the point is develop other cities of the country and give equal oppurtunity to all cities. Not just Bangalore. Learn from America with 50 states X 4 cities/state = 200 developed cities. Everything well spread over. We have to blame on ourselves for todays pathetic condition of once lovely My Bangalore.
Soon Asthama, and other respiratory diseases will rule all in Bangalore.

Parking fees and tolls to deter private vehicles
by M on Sep 25, 2007 07:45 PM  Permalink

Painful as it might sound - heavy parking fees and tolls should be imposed. Bangalore can raise hundreds of crores each year which can be ploughed back into public transport.

This is a road to nowhere
by Para Mesh on Sep 25, 2007 07:23 PM  Permalink

The basic premise of our economic growth is positioned on the continuing advance of the auto industry and everything revolves around it. The so called investments in developing `infrastructure` i.e. roads, bridges, flyovers, parking lots etc. allow the greasing away of crores of rupees to our `netas`and `babus`. You don't really think that we have the sense to follow Singapore and not `Seattle`, do you. More Scions of the Corrupt and compromised are settled in the US of A than in Singapore. Comprendo?

ahmedabad
by Viral Kamdar on Sep 25, 2007 06:28 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Bangalore should learn from the development that is happening in Ahmedabad. Its leading the development rather than following.
Flyovers are built before the roads are congested. Roads are widened before the narrow roads get filled up.
Illegal buildings are demolished before the residents object.

Not to undermine the progress in Ahemdabad but the last point is not entirely true.
Everybody remembers the Gujarat earthquake when even the legal buildings fell down and there was huge cry over pathetic construcation.
