I fail to understand how the writer failed / can ignore to look at services offered by SBI. It offers good exchange rate compared to money2india or remit2india. Check http://onlinesbi.com/glsus with other sites to check the exchange rate and then do a transfer. They also do not charge for transfers to other bank accounts and smaller amounts (icici charges). Do check all sites for exchange rate and make a wise decision.

I wasn't aware of this from UK. Indeed the exchange rates are around Re 1 above the rates published by Money2India. Only hitch is that you need to transfer above ?1000 in order to freely transfer to a non-SBI bank account. Also I am hoping that the service is good and not amenable to the issues and mistakes that the govt bank usually makes. Otherwise I am willing to try this out. Thanks for this advise.
This is a good piece by rediff but are you tired of the same old news sources. Are you tired of the fact that India provides so much scope for satire and humor and yet there is no avenue for the same ? Please check out www.desispin.com and let us know what you think ? It is a brand new web site started for the Indian community by the Indian community. Do chime in with what you think and feel free to become a part of one of India's most happening communities at www.desispin.com .....

i had used icici money2india.com for last 1 years in France and found it to be very reliable, safe and providing decent exchange rate. (No transaction fees) if you have acount in icici bank.

u can transfer from any of the local banks, even the bank in which you have ur account!
Western Union cleverly use Media to fool the public saying it costs only Dh 15.00 to transfer BUT the catch is that the exchange rate is jacked up which the common man fails to understand

yeah, well said, Infact there is no underlying rate (like for eg. RBI rate etc) that is used by many of these channels when they quote the exchange rate to the customers. The cost of transferring is always underreported in articles like these.
