Remember, this article talks about leadership,
not political leadership.

Leadership can be in any arena like economical,
social, spiritual, etc.

Buck stops with each one of us. No point in
blaming the netas. If each of us the 1.1
billion people take one cause in their life
and be a leader, India will be a heaven.

Shall we start doing it ?

Leadership is not just related to Politics.
Leadership is what Narayanmurthy does to Infosys.
Leadership is what Mahatma Gandhi's followers listen and follow him and that's what makes him remembered till now.
Leadership is what made Bill Gates's Microsoft, the number one Software company in the world.
Leadership is shown whenever a winning team's captain (like Australia - cricket) makes them win matches and world champions.

Have positive attitude towards life!!

Learning leadership
by siva on Apr 01, 2007 10:33 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Article makes the nice point of noting that not all that is taught is learnt. Why? Why is it that people who are lofty positions are seldom good leaders as well as seldom good at learning about leadership?
I think it may be fear.

There are essentially 2 human emotions (exclude physical desire etc.. for now). Happiness and fear. Most emotions are somehow derived from this. Unfortunately, in our society, we use fear to drive for success. E.g. we need to meet this deadline, or else, competitor will meet it. While this is market dynamics, it unfortunately inspires us to be afraid. There are a lot of people out there including yours truly that have channelled this fear into career success one way or the other. In our (atleast in mine :-)) bid to be successful, we have let fear become almost like our conscience.

While fear provides some amount of adrenaline to succeed, it also constructs a wall of security around your heart. It closes a few doors, asks a few questioning neurons to take it easy and doesn't let you sway from its chosen path.

In an environment of fear, it is hard to learn anything (let alone leadership) that your conscience (aka fear) tells you not to.

Fear fills you with a desire to succeed, desire kills certains kinds of curiosity and without curiosity it is hard to learn.

Another side effect of fear is lack of sensitivity/care. This also has an effect on learning. (Roger Waters: in "Dark Side of the Moon" says "Dont be afraid to care". I think we are sometimes afraid to care).

Before entering into a workshop on leadership, we must somehow prepare ourselves to either learn or unlearn.

It's easy to write all this. Very hard to implement, but I'll take my little steps :-)

I would think the the emotion, i.e. fear or happiness, which becomes predominant in a person is largely influenced by his surroundings and atmosphere. just imagine when a child is born, he has neither happiness or fear in his mind. when he is growing up he has many encountrs in life, some good some bitter. depending on what sticks into his mind, that emotion becomes the drivin force for him.

In india, we see so many problems in daily life as we grow up tha fear is the most prominent emotion within most of us.. that affects our thinking, performance and efficiency. In many countries, there are not that many problems related to water/electricity/education/social equality/opportunities, that happiness is the natural emotion.

Hi Nitin,

I agree with you that fear could be a predominant driving force within us because of the circumstance in which we grow up. But just because we grew up a certain way does not mean that we should develope and maintain a negative reaction to fear.

I think how we handle fear is what may make a difference in our lives and help us become better people and better leaders. We can choose to not question fear and let it reside in ourselves and maintain status quo. Or we can choose to ask why and see if it is possible to go beyond.

Ofcourse when you conquer one fear , you may come across another one. This is the journey. The hope is to make the enquiry sensitive, engaging and ultimately make the very act of enquiring into fear a fun thing.

I dont think India is any less endowed than other advanced countries (say US). I am not sure that we in India deserve to be sad/afraid while people in US for e.g deserve to be happy.

Just like we have problems with poverty , malnutrition, low self confidence, western countries have problems with teenage drug issues, marital happiness, identity crisis etc.

Now what does all my rambling have to do with leadership :-) Last mail on the subject!!

Siva

You've got a real point Sir. I can personally attest this that fear or anxiety kills a person's desire to perform certain actions as he is attached so much to the outcome that he becomes afraid of taking certain vital steps. One must totally renounce the idea of what would be the result of his/her action and continuously be engaged in action which will bring infinite happiness. The whole point which I/the person above is trying to get across might seem little out of place here but the fact is it's best in place here. One could not be any more freer and happier in life. Leadership would be just a byproduct then.

This is the message expressed by Lord Shrik Krishna in Bhagwad Gita. I think unless we eliminate fear from our psyche, it will be difficult for us to lear or unlearn anything.

Siva, I agree with you and appreciate for sharing your understanding of Indian habitual towards fear.

Its shame we are not happiness driven society!
I would blame the way parents grow their children with little self confidence.

Let people of India realise!

Leadership
by Neo on Apr 01, 2007 09:58 PM  Permalink

I agree broadly with the passage. The biggest problem one faces organization wide are individuals not having the balls to stand up and be counted as leaders, when it matters the most. To handle tough situations, without having to fire standing behind some subordinate as cover, to not manipulate opinion amongst higher ups in an organization, to cover one's own inabilities.
How many indian managers really have the skills and ability to really deal with their line of work? MBA degrees or High Fi qualifications cant give one Leadership! It is an art to lead, and not influence the powers that be negatively and sink at the first signs of trouble!
In my experience onl around 10% in any organisation are really guys who can do any qualitative work, and only 10% amongst them who can really be trained to lead people.

leaders are made, not born
by Hisham Kabir on Mar 30, 2007 02:38 PM  Permalink

no amount of any particular skill is not enought to become a leader, its a art, its a talent, i have come across a different leadership style which is called leadership through fear and unanimous decision. To remove a mis behaved warden in our hostel that i use to stay while i was in college, was under the leadership of creating fear factor, the leader was Mr Upender from Varanasi,he just had one aim, to remove the warden, and he was 6ft well built strong person, and no one till date i guess has the balls to go agaist him, so when he says every one has to be at meeting all are there, and then he ask for suggestions, it there is any difference of opinion then you can say it, if its valuable then they take it, else reject it, and once the decision is taken then all has to be by it, thats it.

leaders are born and not made
by deepika gera on Mar 28, 2007 12:46 PM  Permalink

It is clear from the above article tht leaders are born and not made in schools or colleges , they can only groom them as all the qualities talked above are inborn or natural can't be taught or learned .
