Paris is such a beautiful city because Monsieur Haussman had the audacity to tear down almost the entire city and rebuild according to the master-plan, despite the protesations of its inhabitants. The final result - well they all have been and still are the better for it. Ditto fo Shanghai, Beijing and a host of other Chinese cities springing up everywhere - govt took the tough decisions. Isn't it time India the same? She can create a super-development entity with the authority to do what is required, even though unpopular. But will she - does any govt have the gumption to rile their votebanks? Nope! Can't upset the vote-banks! So India is destined to remain a backward, underdeveloped stinking cesspool of a land, chock-full of filthy dilapidated slums that passes for cities.
I do agree with you on some of the points u have mentioned but thats the downside of being a democratic nation. PIL's are a way of life in a democratic country. A road to Everest would never be possible in India and thank God for that. In China the communists will build the road in a matter of a few days or months irrespective of public sentiment/views. Its no surprise that China is the worlds largest polluter.
