I have been working in a software and dealing exclusively with implementation of eCommerce software both in India and abroad. I think the ground realty is far from what is described above. Infact we have been flooded with so many proposals in last one year that the company has decided to form a different unit catering only to eCommerce! I have been in the industry for past nine years and I can see the difference in the commerce proposals we are getting now to what it was in the dot com era. Then it was a mad rush to go online, now it is proper evaluation of both RoI and product before implementing. Another factor to note is that products like ATG and Websphere Commerce were not that matured in 2001 but they have matured considerably in past 4-5 years and hence companies are sure that they meet their requirements of present as well as future as they have considerable scope for customization. All in all the eCommerce boom has just started and we can see the next round of online retailing specially in India where the opportunties are immense as it has only a small population which merchandises online.
