Again same old story
by B BHAT on Mar 03, 2007 04:09 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

We Indians will never come out of hypocrtical thinking ! whatever the neighbour do's we considered as the best ! we should aware about the basic truth is india is a potential country in terms of natural resources ,interms of intellectual background , interms of humanity ,interms of litreture and cultural powers, interms of economy(my be lagging )and what else.every body should under stand that only technical superiority or economy growth is not the benchmark to measure the competence. before we talk about such things we should aware about the plurality of indian society
( having around 280 to 300 casts and sub casts)and its diversity in nature. if we not we will end as mere jokers !

How many of the management techniques are Indian?? Please tell me. I know of none. And for gods sake, stop with this defeatist attitude. Anyone writes and article in any paper nowadays and people like you come up with " Indians never think of themselves as good". Everybody misses the point that it is about picking up the good things. The author has written the article to make us aware of a different culture. If you cannot take that knowledge, shut up. And again, stop this stupid thing of Indians not being good enough. Time for is to grow up.

Dont compare, just take out the good things !!!
by puneet bhatia on Mar 02, 2007 10:47 AM  Permalink

We should not compare Indians & Japanese as both have grown up in different cultures altogether. Both have their ves and -ves. We should only pick good things from this article and try to implement in our daily life wherever we can. Good things like punctuality, sticking to timelines and adhering to the committments will always help you irrespective of your nationality and geographical location.

Time, Commitment, Perfection
by Vasudev Ramachandra on Mar 01, 2007 12:40 AM  Permalink

I somehow felt it is not good to compare things with Indian context. Things are chaning a lot in India. We accept it was different pre 2000.

Many professionals in India practice all the above. Having global experience and handling Global Clients made Indian Professionals to practice Global Standards.

Overall it is a good article, many of us can practice these to improve our professional and personal growth.

Thanks
Vasu

Time,efficiency,language etc.,

A person can get done a surgery for his cataract in India with Indian doctors in less than four hours and can drive back to his house/office by his scooter/two wheeler with a cost of around Rs.15,000/-. I knew where my friend1s father spend six days in hospital to get out of his cateract in Tokyo and imagine about the cost. There are goods and bads. Please donot rate ourself as low. Think wide before you write, doesn`t mean because somebody is bound to read we can`t write as we think and like.

Missed the point again. Learn to understand the meaning of the article. Don't put up senseless and nonsense comments. Can one case generalise a country?? Please stop generalising. Most of you anti Japan people have done that: no facts just plain old generalising.

I think the point in the article is missed. It only highlights that if you make a commitment to finish the cataract operation in 4 hours, you should do it. Don't take 4 days, and say that it is better than in a stray case in Japan where it took 6 days! (I suppose that in Tokyo the friend's father was told that it would take 6 days - may be they had a loooooong weekend. Ofcourse if he was told it would take 4 hours and it took 6 days, then the article can be blamed.)

Let us take it positively...

Punctuality, timeliness and sticking to commitments - Are ideal characters of a good human and professional.

Indians are wellknown for to have this as negatives...

Let us try correcting ourselves. rather than justfying with examples that even japnese were wrong!

We Indians are almost always in denial mode...no we are not that/this...but the fact is that we are very good at somethings and poor at others, we need to learn positives from other national cultures...it requires some courage to admit we have shortcomings and address the same...two wrongs never make a right...I think time has come for India to assert itself as a nation and its people have a open minded approach to deal with competition and other cultures.

India is best
by harpreet singh mahal on Feb 26, 2007 02:35 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Spending so much time in office does not mean they are working more, rather for same unit of time, they need time more than what at Indian needs!
More time is inefficiency!
Indians are more hard working and family oriented, a big personality train than japanes can think of even!
East or West, India is the best!

Where the question of India being best has come up, the article is not about patriotism it is about Japanese business and I feel they are the best businessmen around, they taught US lesson and once ruled there market too.

Communication and precision !!
by Dev Mukherjee on Feb 25, 2007 03:30 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Well, there are plenty of good and bad things about every country and Japan is not certainly out of this. Japanese do stay long hours at office but work-wise they are not are productive enough for the hours they spent. I think the management of most of the foreign companies in Japan would admit this. Entertainment-wise also Japanese workforce is kind of weird !! Their relaxation is also office-centric !! Leaving office at late night with colleagues, go to bars or "hostess bars" with them and coming home at wee hrs in the morning. Talk to any Japanese, they consider the entire time being spent for office related work. If you start comparing, there is no end to this. Communication wise Indians are much better than average Japanese. Most of the Indian that I have worked with in Japan, understand things faster and better than the Japanese co-workers. If you want to communicate effectively with Japanese, be very precise and tell him exactly what needs to be done, which often is not possible unless you know exactly what is the problem and what to do about it. Well the worst part is you wouldn't understand that your Japanese counterparts haven't understood the instruction...since he wouldn't clarify with you in the beginning. I have seen some articles in this column regarding "bottom-up" approach in Japanese companies. Let me tell you that there is no bottom-up approach in Japanese companies. It's always the mid-up and mid-down. Japanese managers don't like to be questioned by their sub-ordinates. I would suggest the authors to work in some Japanese companies in Japan, analyse the situation and comment.

Let's only

Mr. Mukherjee,
I have worked in Japanese companies and have found that their workers are the most productive. In fact, it is the Germans who have authenticated the fact that Japanese workers are the most productive. The article does not at any point mention Indians not being able to communicate effectively. The entire point of communication you have made, if I am not wrong , is from your personal experience. And about the mid up and mid down approach. The six companies that I worked in plus the 4 others I visited for a week had no such problem. Also, the comment on Indians understanding you better than your Japanese counterpart is ridiculous. Wouldn't a Japanese person understand another Japanese better. The problem with most of the comments against the article is the same. None of you want to learn. Criticism is the word of the day. Please learn to absorb things rather than just repel them. Every thing on earth is educative and not to be taken negatively. Sorry to say, we all seem to have a very negative attitude to absorbing other cultures but when other people come here, we expect them to learn about ours.
Shame on all of us.

Japanese are the most efficient of all
by Vishal on Feb 25, 2007 02:32 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Japanese are in the top class when it comes to efficiency.

They have a history of this. thay have invented so many things. Many stock market tricks were invented by them much earlier than Europeans did.

Japan is a tiny country withvery little resource available. Still it rules the world economy by inporting the raw materials and exporting it to the world.

They are much more efficient than US/Germany/UK or any other country.

They are very knowledgeble people and historically have been liek that. They were the ones who were goign to capture Austrlai and US at one time.

There is no comparison to Japan to India.

Though in the recent years Japan has started loosing its grip as Japanese have started following American culture ans worshipping western world.

Japan is really on decline now.

Contrary to popular belief, Japanese didn't invent a lot. Nikkei weekly came with a supplement few months ago on this topic. The diagnosis was that the Japanese only bettered others inventions. They had the time and patience to sit for long hours improving every tiny aspect of engines, cars and electronics back in 1970s and 1980s. The reason they are falling behind now is because the businesses can not adapt to change as rapidly as counterparts elsewhere.

These are all very well but Japs would rarely ever clearly say "YES" or "NO" - they would invariably prefer "MAY BE" or "PERHAPS" or "POSSIBLY" ...

I have worked with Japs in Tokyo and in India and found this to be the most frustrating part but otherwise Japs do have excellent work practices.

Japanese Huh...read this !!
by Sandip on Feb 23, 2007 08:30 AM  Permalink

Back in the old times there was a powerful Tzar in Russia sent out a declaration throughout the world that he was searching for one skilled martial artist in his court. A year passed and only 3 people showed up. Chinese, Japanese and Indian - (Santa Singh)
The Tzar asked the first (Chinese) to come in and demonstrate why he should be selected.

The Chinese opened a match box and out pops a little fly. Whoosh goes his sword and the fly drops dead on the ground in 2 pieces.

The Tzar exclaimed, "That is very impressive!"

The Tzar then asked the second (Japanese) to come in and demonstrate. He also opened a match box and out pops a fly. Whoosh whoosh goes his sword. The fly drops dead on the ground in 4 pieces.

The Tzar exclaimed, "That is really very impressive!"

The Tzar then had Santa demonstrate why he should be the selected. Santa also opened a match box and out pops a fly. His flashing sword goes whoooooooossshhh whoooooooossshhh whoooooooossshhh whoooooooossshhh whoooooooossshhh. A gust of wind fills the room, but the fly is still alive and buzzing around.

The Tzar, obviously disappointed, asks, "After all of that, why is the fly not dead?"
Santa Singh smiled, "Paaji...If you look closely, you'll see that the fly has been circumcised to precision!
