this article is worth reading. To put it in a nutshell Our strength are weakeness sometimes And At times, our weakeness becomes our strength
One should not be over optimistic or be too pessimistic. A balanced approach is the key to analyse and handle any situation. Too much of unhealthy competition and biased performance feedback of an individual drive oneself too think differently and rate herself or oneself differently. For example, Lets take 'A'. he/she may be very quite by nature, cautious at his/her work and approach. During the time of his/her performance review, if he or she is poorly rated because of his/her interpersonal behaviour , then this tends to affect our natural way of oneself.
One pessimist and a optimist are in a crowd watching a big procession. Pessimist: I am sure, even in this crowd if a bird has shit, it would drop on me. Optimist : Have positive thinking, Elephants do not fly.
you can be anything but society needs optimists because they can only push things with power or insult or force. Pessimists can only idle and think but cannot put anything into action. but pessimists are generally good philosophers than optimists. so they can have a human face to any problem which optimist goondas cannot do

Both optimists and the pessimists contribute to the society. The optimist invents the aeroplane, the pessimist the parachute. - George Bernard Shaw
This should summarize the role and importance of pessimists in our society and their contribution.
