You will know after one month how much Maya is concerned about poors. She has planned a high level comittee which will give a positive report provided Mukesh Ambani offer some prasadam to Maharani Jee. After taking prasadam from Mukesh Ambani, everything will be fine for both i.e. Maya & Mukesh.

Let these states remain backward
by Brian Antao on Aug 23, 2007 10:01 PM  Permalink

Reliance Fresh should not bother to expand in and do business in those states that oppose them and are resistant to them. Let these states remain backward without the services of the advanced retail infrastructure that Reliance Fresh and other such modern retail chains are bringing in. All these modern retail chains should only concentrate on those parts of the contry where they are welcome in and develop those parts of the country... there are many parts of the country that are eagerly waiting for a Reliance Fresh store to open in their neighbourhood. These are the parts of the country that these retail chains should concentrate on expanding on. Those parts of the contry which are opposed to these modern retail stores and as a result are opposed to development in there localities may as a result stay backward, nobody will want to come to your townns and states and develop your lands and do business with you.

Bhramins should think once again
by Manu on Aug 23, 2007 09:54 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

With due respect to Bhramins, I will appeal to reconsider their decision to support mayawati in UP. She got an absolute mejority because of their active support and now want to become the PM of India. I donot have any doubt regarding the capability of bhramins and if they will try, we have no option but to she her reaching the top post of this country one day. The Chanayank created the powerfull Marya dynasty out of a simple man from a farming community. But Chandraguptya Maura has all qualities to lead this great nation.
Now the Bhramins of UP are with this lady who with their support want to be priminister of India. But history will not praise Bhramins for this creation. We need a good dalit leader to rule our country, not a curropt like MayaMemSahab.

i am just surprised at the parade of ignorance
by thomas parathattel on Aug 23, 2007 09:44 PM  Permalink

i am completely surprised at the political illwill and deplomatic intolerance that Mayawati has exhibited in this case. if reliance stores create law and order tensions, mayawati should have employed her law and order machinery to bring law and order in the city. the closure of the stores does not warrant the restoration of the already broken down law and order situation in u.p. both mulayam and mayawati and their political allies and rivals have equal shares in the marring of law and order in the state. i would have appreciated mayawati if she had served notice to at least 10% of her criminal politicians than closing down vegetables stores in the name of law and order concerns.

Choice should have been left to people
by Shachindra Sharma on Aug 23, 2007 09:44 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

As a citizen deeply concerned over the plight of the poor, I have visited the stores like Spencer's thrice. The first visit was on August 14, when mandis in Lucknow were on strike to protest entry of the big players in retail. And two more visits subsequently. While 'seeing' the vegetables on display there I noticed that they did not appear as 'fresh' as they were in the local markets. I pondered over this difference and found that the vegetables (and may be fruits) in the local market were 'fresher' because the vegetable vendor:
a. Frequenly sprinkled water over the vegetables on display.
b. Dyed the vegetables (like parwal, lady fingers and spinach) with non-food colours.
c. Applied burnt mobil oil to polish brinjal to give it that extra shine. Those who have seen the vegetables in farms will acknowledge that the vegetable are not that green and shining as they are in local mandis.

Though I am all for the small traders, I am also dead against the spurious methods they use to push off their produce. Moreover, they are often rude and indulge in other malpractices.

In my view, it should have been left to the people to decide where they intended to purchase their vegetables - quality produce from the stores, or spurious produce from the 'friendly' vegetable vendors. That must have set aside all the controversy.

As far as Mayawati is concerned, she is out to demolish everything which is a 'threat' to her or her projects' security, and is law and order problem.

Very True..Most of the vegetable vendors think only of profits at the expense of peoples health and are very rude and dishonest. However the Reliance is also there to make money and not social justice. However finally it should be left to the consumer and also these small vendors should be trained in customer service, best quality standards , and then they should pool themselves together to fight against any gaint rather than fearing and sulk and die, its far more better to be organised, unite and fight. They also should be brought under agricultral priority sector lending norms so that they can also have access to capital. Then let the consumer decide from whom he has to buy.

Excellent discreption.I wish some one bring a strict law on food contamination as an attempt to murder. Then and then only these practices will be checked. Our trader community from a road side vendor to the Reliance are all guilty of non principled and unethical trading. How much do you want to earn by cheating.Which one will walk away with their money after death. Why can we not have a sense of contentment and try to earn with in legal frame work. But I feel our leaders who are so corrupt need to first correct themselves and then take these people into account.
Incidentally farm eggs are coloured with spent tea leaves to give them a DESI look.
Hope to have a better future for our country.
