The Author is Ignorant

The Author is Ignorant.
It is not Copernicus in 16th century but Aryabatta in 5th century has discovered the earth's movements.

Similarly his description of WalMart is also wrong.
There is IKEA as well in furniture.
What is common between WalMart and IKEA:
All made in China
All made from rubbish materials which will not last for than a few usages.
Wages are very low and there is no benefit( seek pay, pension, medical insurance, gratuity, annual leave---nothing at all.

Why other's cannot do it:
Others are doing it like Fisher-Price or Disney in toys; McDoland in Hambergers, Sony-Sanyo in mobile phone or computers, Cannon in Cameras, Dell in Computers.
Thus, there is no magic.

I agree with you about the quality of products, especially from IKEA. Overwhelming number of their products is made in china, and the quality is terrible. I am currently sittin on a couple of cushions from Ikea. After less than 7 months, all that is left from these is the faded cushion cover - it keeps spewing out feathers left and right, above and below. I'm blowing out a couple through my nose, even as I write this. And the bar stools, made from china. God help - I've suffered enough paralytic butt sitting on these bar stools. The quality of many of their furnitures and kitchen stuff sucks!

Evils of Walmart
by altamont on Oct 01, 2007 04:05 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

In many places when a new Walmart store opens up, they do aggressive cost cutting to drive all local stores out of business after which they are free to hike the prices. Economically this might be alright, but there is something very wrong socially, in this model. Just by being a big player you are able to squeeze out the ones with no so much of money.

We should be very careful of large US corporates and retailers. Look at what is happening with Coke. Entire villages in India (Mehdiganj etc) have been depleted of groundwater reserves as the nearby coke plant has dried up all water.

Those stories against Coke are just exaggerations meant to create dramas. Furthermore, how come small towns in the developed world have never suffered similar things? It's because they are developed. To be undeveloped is to be vulnerable. But if you want development and the safety that comes with it, then you have to do your part to modernize. The world isn't just going to put you on a pedestal and give you things just because you think you deserve it. You have to embrace development and the culture of working harder and making things better. Your suspicion against development is what's kept Indians poor and suffering for the past 60 years.
