Autonomy is deserved
by Kumar Rahul on Apr 26, 2007 01:18 PM  Permalink

The government wants to control everything. The IITs and IIMs have reached this status becasue of the efforts of the honorable professors and the talented students. Time has come that all professional institutions should be let free. They should be made deemed and can earn their expences from students fee supplemented by industry consultation works by the faculty. Politicians should keep their hands off.

THE IIM & Reservation
by on Apr 26, 2007 01:03 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

TAMILNADU expects & supports reservations at the core level. Reason is very simple. Tamil Nadu is the one and only state that has banned the use of caste name (surname) with mainnames and the identification is by initials (normally by father's name. the initial expands to their native place for more specification purpose). the second major step by the TAMIL culture was to thwart & Subdue the BRAHMINS (called as IYERS, Iyengars, Shastris, Varmas etc). To control the economic & educational growth being enjoyed by the Brahmins & the other forward castes. the other forwar castes are domiciles of andhra (some subcastes from reddy, naidu, naiker etc). the politics of tamil nadu was so powerful that they made people of tamil nadu feel proud to say themselves as backward. This is the prime reason where reservations has gained momentum. take an instance of the GOUNDER community which forms over 18 % of the Tamil population. The GOUNDERS have many titles viz the Gounder, Palli, Padayatchi etc. they are almost LAND LORDS and ZAMINDRS. they are equivalent to the THAKURS of UP. A Thakur in UP is not a backward. but the GOUNDER is a listed backward and he is proud to say so. Some subsects withing backward are put under the MOST BACKWARD community. the health miniser is a gounder and belongs to Backward community and hence the support. when an analysis is done, the THAKURS and their equivalent around the country view for the 66% seats (100% - 18% SC - 9% ST - 7% EX-servicemen). when 27% reservation is done, the thakurs will be left only with 66-27 = 49% to vie for. Whereas the equivalent gounders of tamil nadu who have the analogous economic status & education status of that of thakurs have a good fortune with the 27% available. now their hold gets a quantum upgrade. the same thing happened in the government jobs. the POST-MANDAL IAS inputs from Tamil nadu had been marginal raise. It is a simple calculation. assume there is a running race for under 30 years people and a running race for above 40 years people. assume the young under 30 person runs in the over 40 group. he has a fair chance of a comfortable win. this is the situation now. more so, the converted christians take the quota of Adi Dravidas grouping and they are into the jobs & studies. if the government studies the case carefully, of that of teh AIIMS fiasco, it is clear. Probably Dr.Venugopal is a Brahmin (Palgat). the hatered for brahmins from the heart of gounders came forewared and it happened in Delhi, venugopal is in trouble. moreover caste of a tamilian cannot be identified from his name. VENUGOPAL is the name of KRISHNA and everyone has it. it is the caste polity which blows the cans.
REDIFF may probably try to investigate which they may not.
PS. I am a backward tamilian.

Autonomy of IIMS
by shweta sinha on Apr 26, 2007 01:00 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Though several pros and cons exists on the issue of giving autonomy to IITs and IIMs, there is certainly one benefit to achieve. That is keeping the premier institutes of the country free from clutches of the politicians who in the name of providing equality to backward class of society, actually aim at satisfying personal interests. If people on the basis of caste and community are being admitted into the institute, I am afraid, it would loose its quality for which it is known worldwide.

IIMs & IITs
by kguruji on Apr 26, 2007 12:59 PM  Permalink

The two reasons for their brand image are.

1) better infrastructure --> created out of govt's generous funding.,

2) The selection process... The selection process by IIMs / IITs are considered to be the toughest in the world.

Very few sheets are chased by very large number of bright students.

China is reportedly establishing about 2000 strong elite institutions. For India's size, we should have atleast 100 IIMs and IITs.

Govt should allow ISB kind of institutions to come up. The cost of ISB education is about 15 lakhs for one year program. People are willing to spend that kind of money and today banks are ready to finance.

Govt should allow such institutions to come on self finance models and that will be the need of the hour to solve many problems.

Prof Rammohan's response to the criticism of IIMs succumbing to Govt. Pressure
http://ttrammohan.blogspot.com/

Definitely IIMs can't defy govt but what the present govt is doing is highly deplorable. BJP was much better than the present Congress govt with a puppet PM.

Do you mean we should globalise our institutions, and therby employ foreign faculty and students? That is a welcome idea. That will lead to better quality of education.

I fully agree

As the leading professional knowledge imparting entity in India IIMs must function independently rather than allow our illiterate and criminal politicos to control their destinies.

IIm autonomy
by bijay mishra on Apr 26, 2007 12:44 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The prime institutes like IIM & IITs should have full autonomy & they should be out-of-reach of the politicians.

autonomy means government cannot control them.. do u really want it that way because it is we who elect the government.. if u want the country's assets to be out of our government reach (in short, our reach), why not have a private enterprise run this country.. no need of a government..

Who cares for basic schooling, why control higher education!!
by vinod nambiar on Apr 26, 2007 12:41 PM  Permalink

The policy makers and politicians will do well to have a basic Primary Schooling policy so that the millions of peple get COMPULSORY education till 10th class. This is where we have failed miserably in the past 60 years!! Take care of the roots and then they will grow into trees. This is where the focus should be.

Leave the institutes of higher learning to find ways for themselves, with minimum control and interference.
The old politicians / ministers having one foot already in the grave just do not seem to understand this basic logic of social growth!!

IIMs
by venkataraman krishnamurthy on Apr 26, 2007 12:23 PM  Permalink

These institutions are filled with politicians and bootlickers of different kind who aspire to get padmashri or padmabhushan by hook or crook. Eitherway it is gone case with govt control or not it is ruined but htey are running only because of those bright students. If money also becomes one more parmaneter, then bright candidates with no money are left out. All these banks paying loans etc should first be streamlined so that exactly the needy can get it. until allthis things are properly corrected their is no fun in any of these ideas.
