I would like to see Walmart in India but wouldn't allow even 1% selling imports from any other Country let alone China. Total 100% of walmart store keeps and employees should be Indians.
This guy talks nonsense! One stage he says wal-mart will wipe out all small and big retailers. And at another stage he says they will operate only at top end! Either one of that is true! Today consumers are loosing out due to 1. too many retailers who have no clout to get better prices from the FMCG manufactures 2. Tax evasion and cheating and substandard products etc. Best way forward is let walmart come in%u2026 let them fight and survive whichever way they can. In today%u2019s globalized world, if you close your doors everyone else will close doors on your products and services. Don%u2019t underestimate the power and resilience of the kiranawalas. So many of us enjoy credit (without any paperwork) door deliveries , informal product guarantees and returns. Walmart will have to struggle and spend

Well.. am not against wntry of Walmart or for that matter any other larger retailer.
I sure would love to see walmarrt in India but the problem inclusing in the US has been that of poor execution of such policy decisions (of course its not a policy decision in the US but one of execution).
Just comapre this with that of the SEZ's in India, its not that we dont want SEZ's but where and what are we going to do with the people that are effected.
It just boils down to a fantastic statement by the supreme court today on the OBC quota issue "frame the rules and then play the game"
So lets open up the market but with some sense of responsiblity towards the poor and marginalized farmers, traders, small time self employed folks of this country.
For consideration... walmart procures a wrangler jean from wrangler at what price? and at what price is it retailed? What is the retail price for the same product in India sold thru the current retail chains - exclusive or other wise? Is there a difference? If there is then why and of not why?
In the US Wal marts hardly have any fresh produce in the stores but they are talking of helping the farmers here, I doubt unless they have a different format in mind for India.
Suggestions;
a) Just like the FDI norms put a cap on imports by the retailing company b) Set employment rules c) Set rules for repatriation of funds - although indirecly by FDI caps but state it upfornt as well for the share held by the foriegn company d) Set plough back rules - a percentage of rev. to be ploughed back in development of the vendors at large (not chosen ones)
Let the retail revolution bring us the benefit of not only lower prices (which I doubt) but better life for all the support infrastructure.
This can be achieved only if its executed well and not as a knee jerk action as the Indian government is looking to do right now. They have not thought thru the entire chain of events and if they have then its been a poor job of educating us till now.

Manjanna must be beating his wife. He will be beating until his wife rebels. Whatever may happen the walmart is going to come. They will give better rates to farmers than a small chain of tax evading traders. These traders inturn loot more than any body in India. They start shops in all residential localities and make a mess of traffic. Because of these traders India is becoming like a country of shop keepers and public looters.

dont forget they are no.1, beware they can come "saat smundar par"and can make it. LIBERALISATION ZINDABAD. Be empirical if they comes in ur neighbourhood u cant retard your family.
Wal-Mart became the No,One Corporation and also No.1 largest retailer store in the world more than 4 tears ago.Last year they had sales of $350 billion, employing thousands of people all over the globe. By their coming, small retailers stil have a place in the consumer market. Wal Mart can have stores only in big cities and not in every bazar or lanes. There are thousands of small retailers in villages and small towns. Is it not ridiculous to think people in rural areas walk miles to go and shop in Wal Mart. Allbig cities and towns in India are overcrowded with people, cars, buses, trucks and bullock carts etc. There is no parking space for vehicles in big cities. This fact itself makes people buy from the corner grocery store. Indians have developed personal relations wiyth small stores, many of whom give discounts, credits, home delivry and serve them with a smile. Seven Eleven Shops all over USA are still doing good business and serving the nearby clients from 7.00 AM to 11.00 PM. Additionally, Wal Mart with its innovative marketing techniques and supply chain logistics offers Every Day Low Prices. An average consumer family of sayt 5 people in a middle income group may save over Rs. 5 to 10,000 per annum.Because, we are saved the huge prifits middlemen make. True, a few small stores may vanish in the neighbourhood of Wal Mar. All big MNCs which have come to India have thrown out many small vendors and factories out of job. Globalization also has done it. But the nation as a awhole has gained enormous economic benefits. Even today there are over 10 million bullock carts in service in India. Have cars, buses and trucks and jet planes made them redundent? Both exist side by side mand will be there for many more years. Big 5-star and 7 star hotels have come You are also seeing many new hundreds of small hotels coming up and making monney.Let us not be blind for the transformation in the living styles of people taking place all over ther world. India is no exception. Both big and small are beautiful!

Mr Krishnamurthy, Let me tell you why K-Mart should NOT enter India. Reason 1 is Economic: As a consumer (you may not realise) without Wal-Mart you have umpteen choice of where to buy your foodstuff from. And u pointed rightly, you have developed some sort of relationship with this seller. Wal-Mart entry will undoubtly drastically reduce your CHOICE as a customer- of where you can buy your stuff from. Small business will not be able to sustain. Reason no. 2 is equity: Considering our huge diversiy only a certain class of people (middle-rich) will be able to buy their stuff from Wal-Mart. 'Co-existence' as you pointed out is healty when things exist together in the same place rahter than spatially different places. Why should certain areas of the city look like fancy Wal-marts and others as decrepit, run-down places of small-businesses? We mut aspire for socially equitable places - where all types of people are welcome. This currently happens on our streets where hakers etc. provide for all setions of society. Reason no. 3 is Evironmental: Superstores like Wal-Mart will consume high amount of power in their air-conditoned mega-boxes. Compare that with samll shops like Mother Dairy food/grocery outlets or hawkers which do the same job in a much more environment friendly way. Moreover superstores encourage driving to them rather twalking as you currenly do. In the est, communitie are trying to do the dificult job of get small businesss work. And sm to be going in the opposite direction- not leaning from their mistakes. Big and small is beautiful but unfortunately they belong to opposite ends of the societal power structure.
I think we again need Bapu here who stopped foreign products and burnt their cloths...just to protect local manufacturers and dealers.. No Wal-Mart Please
Walmart should be allowed as they would bring a drastic change in the business practices of traders who were taking indian consumers for a ride till now. However government must make a rule that for first 5 years the store should source 80% of its goods from India. In this way our own market would become mature and strong enough to defend / excel and compete with global giants without sacrificing small traders. Let everyone enjoy fruits of Global market and fair trade.

What is wrong with you, why do you think that whatever Wal-Mart would be doing in India cant be done by Indian entrepreneurs. Why do you think that Tatas entering retail business and selling locally produced goods is better than Wal-Mart selling Chinese goods, may it be only for 5 years as you suggest. All local traders should be asked to merge into an Indian retail concept which can be very unique. There is no need for any Wal-Mart to do this. Now you may say that India doesn't have any logistics and good distribution skills in retail, but my friend you need to understand that no one in this business had those skills. There was a time when vegetables used to be sold in streets in America. India can devise its own methods and ways which will give local manufacturers and store owners their value for money. Indians have smart business skills ( remember thats the advantage over our Chinese counterparts ), so why not put them to use and do things on our own rather than taking help from a shrewd capitalist retail stores who dont care about anything, except profits. It amy take time but it will have much longer benefits.

I do understand ur concerns and agree with you. Dont you think Tatas and Reliance are already getting in this business but they are small as compared to global giant. They need some time to stand tall and mature. i am sure that they better understand indian mentality and combined with the learnings they would get from global giant they would be in a better position to serve indian people.

But thats what the point is: we dont want to learn from this Wal-Mart. We want to do it by ourselves, doesn't matter if it takes more time but it will be self earned. Who knows that a few decades down the future, Reliance or Tata retail business will be as big as Wal-Mart. Also, we the people of India would be the ones making our local entrepeuners, they would be someone just like us and hence will understand us much better rather than some multinational corporation. As for expertise, there is a reason why it is called as "expertise" as it comes from experience. You are saying not to do ourselves and just go and get it from someone, that should not happen. I am not against globalization and liberalization but I would never support Wal-Mart coming into India ever.
Wal-mart will be the worst thing to happen to India after open market implementation in India. It will surely kill the small shopkeepers, workers and farmers. Wal-mart campaign about creating jobs in the area they open up, but at what expense. Many self employed shopkeepers etc are out of work. Open up google and see how many cases are filed against Wal-mart for labor related violations, taht is in USA (Think about that in India). Also think about trade deficit as Wal-mart imports from China. They are monsters and everything is about money.
