dont think too much about stock market mechanism
by Prof R K Gupta-India on Apr 23, 2007 12:20 AM  Permalink

I am amused to read so many namesake experts floating around in market and crying out from TV sets. When market takes a bull run all of them come out and when its bear's time they simply hide.
There is nothing like Value averaging or rupee cost averaging. The funda is very simple .Never try to time the market. And don't be greedy.
Just invest what you want to invest not putting all eggs in shares basket.Stay put for 5-6 years, minimum.Just watch the companies in your portfolio.Change any of these if likely to tip.Don't try to be smarter than markets.Share markets on background take lot of hard work, innovation, production and mareting to make profits. It is not like an oil well that oil keeps coming out freely.Companies do generate profits and accumulate wealth but over a period of time. That is that.Period!

value cost averaging
by Bijoy Bhukania on Apr 22, 2007 10:24 PM  Permalink

Rediff should carry an article on Value Cost Averaging (VCA) method of investing, as opposed to Rupee Cost Averaging (RCA), popularly known as SIP. I had digged out couple of articles on that, and I serously think that at least Rediff should promote that.

another note: SIP is known as Dollar Cost Averaging in USA. "Finance Specialists" have shown, and it can shown mathemtically that, SIP does not help you generate higher return over lump sum investment, as is being promoted by Rediff/Personalfn.com. However, SIP does help you commit certain amount for long term investment.

stp better than sip
by arun gandhi on Apr 22, 2007 10:11 PM  Permalink

if we are planning to invest , we have surplus funds which are usually parked in Savings Bank accounts , which offer a return of 3-4 % . From this we usually opt for sip's . However stp's do the same function as sip's , but at the same time they earn @ 8-9 % which is so much better than the 3-4 % earned in an SB Account during the waiting period .
So stp's are definitely better than sip's , unless we are in the salaried middle class ,squeezing out the instalments every month .
