This is not the first time that rediff titles its article in a misleading manner. Hope rediff corrects itself and places good editorial staff to oversee content.
Anyone who smokes or drink does that on his own wish. May be he is addicted after sometime which is again what he chose. A govt imposed ban is against human rights. You can ban smoking and drinking in public but not when one desires to do so in non public area. This time in kerala it is Traders who are imposing the ban.. It is their way to protest... That is also fine.. It is against the companies whom they would want to pay the VAT instead of them.. Traders will suffer, companies will have to face some loss and also the smokers in the state will have tough time, purchasing ciggerates at higher rate or sometime not able to get them... Who would be happy ???? If smoking is bad, Govt should fund more of voluntary organisations who helps in quiting smoking or rehabilation (Cognitive cases)....

Nothing sort of imposed ban will happen. Kerala have a great resource for beedi. A smoker himself can make his own beedi and smoke.
In every nook and corner beedi is available. Made on order beedi.
By heart people from kerala loves beedi. So this strike won't effect the smokers.

more people die from heart attacks than lung cancer..why not ban cheese, oil, ghee and butter than..why just ciggerates..?? About liquor-if you ban it than also ban all the life saving drugs that contain alcohol--Bloody Double Standards

You can drink at your will but not smoke..cause smoking affects even the people around you.
Definitely the editor of this website needs a crash course in doing good and correct headlines.
I'm sure more than 90% of the users thought it was a govt-imposed ban, making me happy for a moment...that is until I realised that it was yet another 'show of protest' in a state that has plenty of it in multitude forms.
Beedi workers in Kerala were worrying for a long time about the slump in their vocation. Now, their hopes are revived. Malayalis would not mind changing to beedies if cigarettes are not available. Producers, sellers and consumers are all winners. For the corporate Cigarette manufacturers like ITC, the loss is easily bearable.
INDIA TRIED LOTS OF PLANS AND POLICIES TO REDUCE POPULATION BUT EVERYBODY KNOWS WHAT HAPPEND TO THOSE POLICIES, WITHIN ANOTHER 5-10 YEARS WE ARE ON TOP OF THE CHART IN POPULATION, CIGARETTES, ALCOHOL, GUTAKA'S, ARE ALL WORKING AS POPULATION CONTROL BOARD IN INDIA, THATS WHY REMOVE THAT BAN ON CIGARETTES, PEEYO, PEENEDO AUR MARNEDO. BECAUSE OF OVER-POPULATION NO JOB, NO FOOD, WATER EVERYTHING. LET THEM DIE THERE OWN.
As now a days there are very less govt. jobs, Kerala government has braought a very nice idea to earn livilihood for our youth, particularly from kerala region. Here many persons should set up cigerrate shops saying they are banning ciggerates sales, so they can sell chocolete with free cigerrette, and the sale of chocolette and cigerette will increase
AFTER THIS BAN ON CIGARETTES, RAJANIKANT ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT. OTHERWISE THERE IS ACTION ROLES FOR RAJANIKANT, NO ACTION NO PUBLIC. RANJANIKANT WE ADVICE YOU- ITS BETTER TO MIGRATE TO ANY OTHER STATE.

Rajninkant and Kerala? What are you trying to cook?
Rajnikant is a Marathi, who used to work in Bangalore as a bus conductor and moved to TAMIL film industry. (Off topic - I remember when I moved to Mumbai, one of my colleagues from Delhi asked me "So how is the weather in Chennai" when i told him that I am from Kerala!!!!!!)
