How companes are making>>>>>>>>>part 2
by S Narayanan on Oct 30, 2006 02:24 PM  Permalink

Well then i thought how can we make a leader when my own boss tells me against it..but i told him that i have thought about this cooly and if i have to change what i have written then he can do it..i will not change what remarks i have given...I think this has been the major problems in most of the cos. We want leaders but we do not want to encourage them to become good leaders because we are afraid to accept our short comings...leaders are made or leaders can be developed is a question one can keep on debating. But the moot reality is we need to encourage youngsters but we need people with experience too. It is those companies which can balance this out will eventally can bring the best out of their managers who can be termed to be leaders. I am afraid that only few companies still In India want good leaders. Many of the managers are still afriad of their own shadows. Even in political arena one can see the type of leaders we elect. When good people do not vote then how can se expect good leaders to emerge. The same rule follows in corporate jungle too..When talented people are not recognised and leaders are not developed the people will go where they will feel peace and comfort.

Very intersting topic in Indian Context. We indians suffer till date on the upbringing factor. That is when your father suggests something it is difficult to say NO to him. This advice then turns into your job where you have a boss who too has the same upbringing of protection which eventually leads to more of followers than leaders...Even today when we talk our National Leaders we can only talk of very few and every time the name of Gandhiji comes up. This shows that we indians still have a great mindset and to become a good leader you need great qualities. One of the greatest quality as i see is putting yourself behind others..in other words lack of selfishness. i am sorry to say in my 32 years of management career i have hardly seen a person who has put his interest behind his followers or colleagues. Most of them i find are so self centered the first will see whether their interest are taken care off before putting his colleague's. I do not claim myself to be a great leader. I was working for a leading engineering co in Mumbai when i had to assess on of my colleagues for P>A and i wrote in the from better than me and my boss told me are you kidding...Well then i thought-contd 2

I am not thinking that in india there is a leadership scarcity. The main thing is that brain drain and inability to identify the dynamic leaders
