Well Sri Ajit Balakrishnan's guess that computer ,E-mails, SMS and other quick means of instant communications are completing the westernisation of scripts for most Indian languages in near future would be a great happening.If it indeed produces and enriches inter-actions in our contested turfs of rival languages like Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi,Bengali in the north and perhaps the same for speakers of great texts of Kannad,Malayalam , Telegu and Tamil it may bring integration of medium later between all the things thought and spoken by most of our country men.Hopefully , this may create understanding and appreciation of world-views so expressed in these texts.It would be a greater contribution of getting close to Indian's core feelings than merely Macaulay's asseverations about English as medium of Education had so far made over the colonial and the post-colonial epoch. One wishes that it could have been some readaptation of some Indian script say Devnagari and some recast of Tamil family of great southern traditions rather than Roman ,but facts as they exist ,this is the best we can hope to get.D. I think, it is indeed a very good idea to use English script for local Indian languages. A standard for this should be made which will bring all the users of this type of writing to follow the rules.
Sir, I may humbly disagree with your view. I have a Hindi-typing software which I use in MS-Office. Of course the Hindi-keyboard is on-screen, but I wont be surprised if some qwerty boards are replaced by Devanagiri given that so many rural folks are now getting access to computers.
