Do B-Schools teach this
by Sabih on Mar 15, 2006 11:46 AM  Permalink

Well nice thought but the example quoted was not the most original one. I have read this example in one of the books by Bill Gates.

by Sreekumar on Mar 15, 2006 11:40 AM  Permalink

I am an Alumnus of Goa Institute of Managment, and the styles of management was deeply discussed and anaylsed in many of our classes, including Organisational Behaviour, International Marketing etc.
Our exchange programme with Antwerp university has also helped with Foreign faculty helping us out in knowing European way of business etc.
So... Now I feel personally proud that it was a well rounded course!

Japanese/American get the info right....
by Ravi on Mar 15, 2006 11:34 AM  Permalink

Hello Sir,

Got the point about what you are trying to convey.

But with respect to the story that you attributed for Japanese have a superior approach to problem-solving, i.e the ice cream story, it was not solved by a Japanese company but, it was a problem in Pontiac Division of GM motors and the problem was solved by American engineer.

Now are we to believe that Americans have a superior approach to problem solving? or Would it mean that Japanese have superior approach provided you give the right example?

Anyways, all my point is in this age of information technology...it is become very necessary to get the data right and give right information in all sense of the word.

Dear IIM all entities,

Sir i am paisned about your advertsement of 180,000 US dollar salary, as if huge salary to your students is a reflection of that man whom you equate him hs greater than Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. APJ Abdul kalam, Azim Premmji, Narayan Murthy.

Well Sir he gets 180,000 dollars how much he donates it to the soceity, commuinity the have nots, has IIMs teaching them educare and values and Gandhianism, sarvodaya, mahavira, Buddha, etc..

He will earn 180,000 dollars what is it gain to mother india.

Sir, I hope something is very wrong in this, somebody should wake up, for one Mother Theresa was she IIM product and what is her contribution to soceity. Reallythe social service of all IIM graduates is it greater than Mother Theresa?

Do such columns teach ANYTHING?
by Amit M on Mar 15, 2006 09:00 AM  Permalink

Very sorry for this, but I think it has to be pointed out that this column did not have anything whatsoever to do with what one would expect from the title (and hyperlink therefore). All it did was take a much repeated story and try to fit it in somehow. Just cashing in on the B-School buzz that's happening because of recored placements this year huh?

Good to hear the 'ice-cream' story again anyhow.

Mgmt Style
by rajeev peringannur on Mar 15, 2006 08:09 AM  Permalink

Interesting...but i dont think we can clearly define any managment style...Every country has its own management style embodied in their culture! Most probably in the next decaded B-school may include Chinese mgmt and Indian mgmt style in their syllabus :)

I agree...
by Nitin Sharma on Mar 15, 2006 03:09 AM  Permalink

I agree with this article. As there can be no single-approached solution befitting any situation, differing management practices help reaching the solution faster based on what the need is.

Thanks,
Nitin
