NO! to Reservations
by Balrog on Jan 23, 2006 04:56 PM  Permalink

Hi,
I won't put this across mildly. My company(US Based) has already made long term plans to abandon the country if reservations are imposed. Likely hundreds of companies will take their money and depart the nation.
Dr Singh and his government will forever live in Infamy as the men and women who killed the Golden Goose.

Here's to finding Dr Singh
by labrea on Jan 03, 2006 11:50 PM  Permalink

Dr Singh is no more the PM of India than Tony Blair is Queen of England - he's a proxy PM, a mere pawn, a puppet in the hands of Sonia Gandhi, incapably of any unilateral, personal decision-making. Sonia Gandhi is not just the Cong party chief, but 'the' hand behind the PM, making all decisions, with Dr Singh merely mouthing them in public. Remember it's the same commie Cong policies which created the original dungheap of a mess, and now once more adding to the pile. The more things change they more they stay the same - so much for 'reforms'.

Quotas are not bad if only the economically, socially or otherwise disadvantaged have access to them
by navjot on Jan 03, 2006 01:01 PM  Permalink

The knee-jerk reaction to a system of quotas betrays a convenient selfishness or lack of understanding. We live in a system built on certain concepts like a legal-system,meritocracy,free markets etc. This leads us to expect that historically disadvantaged groups like the SC/ST will try and improve their lot within the framework of the existing system. However, in this system, opportunity beget opportunity. The richer you are, the richer you can get. The poorer you are, the less your chances of getting rich and so on...While it is convenient for the well-off to demand a meritocracy, there really is no inherent merit in being born to a rich family. How am I, who was born in a middle class family and got the best education, more deserving than somebody whose family was too poor to afford their kid's schooling ? Anyways, the moot point is that if a society is to avoid disruptive corrections(eg: the Maoist 'revolution' in India, land-grabbing in Zimbabwe etc.) brought about by the chronic and systemic denial of opportunity, the well off have to make concessions. In return for the poor conforming to a system where the odds are stacked against them, the rich have to grant them concessions
