Pay hike vs Efficiency
by Pratap on Feb 10, 2006 03:21 AM  Permalink

Workforce should be brought down and /or re allocate in to new Service areas. Abolish un-necessary posts.

Pay hike sould be based on Efficiency and productivity, and not megre on no of years in job.

Pay Hike based on Efficency wouldnt hamper the Economy. Otherwise it would eat up the taxpayer's money.

Sixth Pay Commission
by Oscar Coelho on Feb 10, 2006 02:14 AM  Permalink

Yes of course the Government has to set up the Sixth Pay Commission and raise the wages of the Government Employees, including the pensions of those retired employees. How can some one survive on low wages and pensions, when the Indian economy is growing and the standard of living is becoming higher day by day? What about medical expenses, and why are we not talking of the 1000's of crores of rupees that a retired persons have lost on their provident funds invested in savings in Banks etc. All do not have the intelligence to invest in Stocks!!

At the same time the Government has to take strict measures to reshape the Government bodies like the Railways, the Postal Offices, the Police, the Civic bodies. The Railways for example--many departments--like the smith shop, electrical department have been given on contract basis--and the number of employees are the same in the respective departments. People work only during the morning time, and the afternoon is spent playing cards. The Postal staff has to be innovative and start new sections like Money Transfers, Courier deliveries etc. Shape up or get closed down should be the motto! But wage rise for those working and retired is must.

6th Pay Commission
by Chandru on Feb 10, 2006 01:31 AM  Permalink

It\'s disgusting to note the views written on the column. I represent the hapless lot of government officers, rather employees as a whole. The age old opinion about this section is no more valid. Downsizing has begun already. Today there\'s no replacement for retirements. We do twice the work we used to do before. I can show you many officers and staff working extra hours and even on holidays without any monetary benefits. May be the columnist\'s father and forefathers were dodging. It\'s not the case with majority of government employees now. We\'re aware of our responsibilities and do justice to our wages. Whenever wage revisionor concession for MLAs or MPs is announced by the FM who doesn\'t dare to cut these wasteful expeditures, there\'s thumping of desks. Let\'s not forget they are the culprits for the plight of this country. A govt. servant doesn\'t get even half of what his counterpart gets elsewhere. Gold medallists and meritorious youth are shunning Govt. service for the meager pay it offers. It\'s a mere hand to mouth existence for most of us. Let us atleast lead this life. Leave us alone pls.

Salaries should be at par to demand efficiency at work.
by Saurabh on Feb 10, 2006 12:30 AM  Permalink

India is booming. True. But what about the postman coming to my home with my mails. Doesnt he deserve the benefits of the economy. Are the people who do not give taxes the only deserving people to reap the fruits of the country's prospertity. Does the money in banks signify prosperity or money in the pockets of India's Devender and Hari.

But still I feel that this should be comparable to efficiency at work. Planned expense is vital for our country.

the best way to improve the reserves would be increase the tax incomes. As the wages improve there shud me an increase in the tax payment as well. Here there should be proper collection of the tax at source, as was planned the social security identification number should be given to each and every individual of the country. The best way to get hold of each and every individual is to hold them at the basic commodities and issue an identification number and hence thereforth all the trasactions of the individual should be taken on the identification number. For this the obstacle is computerisation, no there is no dearth for unemployed computer graduates in the country. If country can offer them online projects then the entire system in the country can be computerised in a very short time.
I feel the time has come for a comission to sit to work on the computerisation of the entire system in the country, i.e, all the administrative departments should work at the grass root level to get this done.
thanks
if this is done almost 80% of the problem for the next coming decade is solved

VI pay commission
by Manoj Dhaka on Feb 09, 2006 11:22 PM  Permalink

Not all the government employees are corrupt and lazy as made out by highly corrupt and irresponsible electronic media in particular. Yes, i agree downsizing and accountability is needed and must come along with pay commission recommendations. But why not a comparable pay packet to competent government employees? Govt employees comprise of scientists, technologists, administrators, professors etc but times of India will always call them babus in its articles. Journalists must respect other professionals as well. People know how the noble profession of journalism has gone down recently.

Salary hike is COMPULSORY
by Irfan Shah on Feb 09, 2006 11:17 PM  Permalink

Wages of ALL government employess should be REVISED As EARLY as possible.

As per the fundamentals of ECONOMICS:

Higher the per capita income,

higher is the BUYING power of individual.

And higher would be the booming rate of Economy.

Price rise is day to day affair.

Then why is salary hike done only once in a decade ??

So funny
by Nag on Feb 09, 2006 09:33 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

If India is prospering, it has nothing to do with the Goverment or the Manufacturing sector. The enterprenueral skills of private indian citizen is making the indian ship cruise and the govt & public sector employee want to offset the speed thru 6th pay commission! I think the worldbank statement about 5th pay commission should have been stronger and more hitting!!

It would be stupidity to hike the salaries!!! instead focus the efforts/money towards bettering the economy like improving infrastructure or reducing poverty... Pl think and act well if not wisely

Dear Alok,

Are you aware of the impact in the oragisations like BHAHA, DRDO, ISRO and other scientific organisations of the Central Government. There is an acute crisis of technical expertise manpower as many of them left their jobs and still leaving. Do you know how many years and how much effort it takes for the government to groom them. But even after that these engineers /scientists are leaving their job. Do you know why? GUESS for yourself.
