Cut out the flab...
by Abhishek on Feb 10, 2006 06:19 PM  Permalink

Cut out the flab, i.e. remove inefficiency from Central & State governments and make the wages linked to performance....this way at least the deserving ones can get a better pay package comparable to the Private sector. This is the only way out of all this mess...

Hypocracy on very front
by kumar on Feb 10, 2006 06:16 PM  Permalink

The article by Mr.Shourie, who headed the Disinvestment Ministry, brings out the hypocratical attitude of the people belonging to various classes of society. The Parliament members do not see any burden on the Government when the facilites for them have to be increased. The so called educated society which forms a major part of Indian Middle class do see burden on Indian econonmy when subsidy schemes for Below Poverty Line and farmers are announced. But they don't have no botheration when Pay Commissions are set rise their salaries.

1.Govt employees quote only basic but draw HRA, DA,CCA and many other allowances.
2.Malis, Drivers , Chaiwallas, Print room assistants draw as much as forty thousand including overtime.
3.They forcibly take overtime and if overtime is not paid they stop working in normal time.
4. Delhi Municipal corpn has on roles 40000 safai karmacharies employees who never report to duty and busy on their personal work.
5. These people should think of engineers and supervisors who do technical work an get paid around 10-15000 consolidated and employed in thousands of small establishments with out any job security.

Perils of 6th Pay Commission
by D M on Feb 10, 2006 11:24 AM  Permalink

Corruption in this country is created by Politicians and squarely blaming Government Employees is not fair. I havent see any hue and cry from Public when the salaries of MPs and MLAs are hiked. Besides salary hikes please look into other amenities given to them. Their hike is passed in Parliaments and Assemblys without opposition. Does any one who critises Government Employees dare to question this? Please be informed Government Employees are forced to be corrupt by the Politicians and Public.

Private Sector, Banking Sector and Insurance Sector gets hefty pays besides hefty retirement benefits whereas the Government employees get a meagre retirement benefit. Ofcourse they get pension, but take the average life of a person and calculate the pension that would be given to a retired person. Still the Government is profited with Pension Scheme. To tide over this, the Voluntary Retirement Scheme should be revived with more benefits and reducing the number of years from 20 to 15 and I am sure more Government Employees would opt VRS.

vi pay commission
by m.ravi on Feb 10, 2006 11:07 AM  Permalink

With the increase in price of essential commodities in every budget, it is very difficult to manage house hold expenses. The cost of children education and medical treatment is going high. the financial rise excluding tax deduction is only marginal. govt should curtail number of ministers both cabinet and state and their perks which are not justified. There are ministers without portfolio siphoning tax payers money without any reason but continue in their offices because of compulsion due to coalition. Tax evation by using loopholes in the laws by business giants should also be controlled. Whatever, tax arrears which are to be recovered, has to be done on war footing so that the deficit could be made up.

Its a Fashion to blame the govt for everything
by Balasubramaniam R on Feb 10, 2006 11:05 AM  Permalink

Its has become fashoinable in this country to blame the govt for everything that is wrong. The govt can only be as good as the people of the country. For every corrupt govt servant there is a corrupt citizen who is actually corrupting the govt. Just as there are lazy employees in the govt one can see lazy employees in the pvt sector also who do not attend to service calls pass of shoddy goods after poor quality control. Most of the so called increased revenues are generated by the service sector where value addition is not tangible. Most of it is demand driven and would be saturated in the near future then the industry would start cutting corners. Govt. is in doldrums not just because of the fat it carries it is more due to tax evation by industrialists, businessmen and smuggling/piracy of contrabrand goods. So let us not simply blame the govt and pay commisions for the sorry state of affairs.

Sixth Pay Commission
by Ranjan on Feb 10, 2006 11:04 AM  Permalink

Government by giving salaries is actually helping the corporate sector by creating a middle class consumer. It has been the record that the Indian Consumer Goods sector has boomed after each pay commssion. Had we left it to the so called Pvt. Sector we would never have created such a huge consumer class for the economy. The other day there was a news that India would have highest pay increase in Asia. If that be sure, what is the sin of Govt. Sector to remain in penury. I am sure this pay hike will be confined only to IT sector which is almost synonimous to BPO sector in India. There is a huge imbalance among the Sectors in Indian economy in respect of wages.
A bogy has been raised against Govt.employees after Reforms, though Pvt. Sector has not done much apart from retrenching employees. If we leave it to Pvt. Sector they will kill the middle class that attracts investment into India.

Politician's great mistake.
by anand on Feb 10, 2006 11:02 AM  Permalink

Fifth pay commission advised to increase the payscale and to downsize the posts. This was the politician's great mistake that they have not implemented the second one. Hence Arun shourie's comment is not matured one. Govt. employees should get their benefit as their service is very much valuable to the progress of the country.
