The author has a very unidimentional view about the issue. I think the editors at rediff should spend time reading such article before posting them on the main page.
Powerful statements which hint at "leaving behind" thousands of years of injustice sound immature and very "blog-ish". The author definitely does not merit the status of a guest columnist.
There is no doubt that the current reservation policy has serious flaws - but till a better solution is found, there is no other way out.
Hope better sense prevails at rediff - i sincerely hope that I don't find such pathetic articles on the main pages of rediff.
I feel that reservation is necessary for a sciety like ours, which has got economic imbalance between differect sectors of the society. But the question is , Whether giving reservation based on caste is the correct solution?
Why not take the economic background as criteria for reservation? After all this reservation is meant to decrease the economic rift.
What justice do we do if we give job to an economically rich(academically poor) candidate from backward class instead of an economically poor(but academically better) candidate from upper class?
Even if we want to give reservation based on caste we should try to remove all the candidates whose fatheres and grandfathers are already benefitted by reservation and who are economically sufficient.

This is a good suggestion. I might just add that the whole idea of quota system or reservation as u may call, was concieved for bringing about equality between diff sections of the society. But unfortunately, myopic policies has brought about an erosion in quality. The policy makers, i feel, have lost sight of the quality factor by running behind equality. for bringing about equality, let the Govt provide free education for the backward sections. But when it comes to admissions and jobs, merit should be the only critirea. Otherwise, the dream of India becoming the IT hub and the biggest economy will just remain a dream.

there is no discrimination on economic basis.the prejudices are based on caste.it has to be caste.those protesting now should try to end casteism .jug
While I fully endorse to the views expressed by the author, let me say that backwardness should be considered on the basis of economical background not on cast or religion.
