Doesn't hold water

I am just wondering how this article would fare if you consider people just as "indian", rather than identify them as per caste and or religion.

had it omitted the mention of words "muslim, hindu, OBCs, SC SCts and considered just rich and poor it would have been much better. The author vaguely mentions this point in his article, but its lost by the constant inclination towards caste and religion based analysis.

why consider a caste/religion based analysis at all if poverty does not have any religion. reading ramayana or quran does not give any body any leverage in passing the entrance exams to colleges ! God has just got no role to play here,, a persons individual aspirations and econimic background, has.

thats why.. lets just see the rich and the poor and stop caste based statistics/ analysis.

author is right in emphasising importance of grass root education, but misses the point of abolishing any form of caste/religion based government support.

hence it does not hit the nail on the head.

jai hind,
Ashish. ( i am a doctoral student, pursuing studies at the georgia institute of technology, Atlanta)

The real and only problem of India is upper caste Fascism. To counter that caste based social studies and social engineering etc.is the best solution.

Education quotas are unfair
by labrea on Apr 16, 2006 12:07 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

"Minority', as seen by the Constitution, is taken to mean one's ethnicity - born into a certian group or sub-group, comprising a certain segment of society, usually marginalized. Muslims on the other hand are not minorities, as muslim is not an ethnicity but a religious grouping. One can change one's belief and hence one's religion as often as one likes, but one cannot change one's ethnicy - you are born so, and will forever remain so - always! Hence, Muslims are as Indian as every other citizen and are are not a minority! So, let's get this quite clear - 'minority' in this secular democracy, is based on ethnicity not religion!

Poor uneducated simpletons, highly religious, and superstitious. Why attack them instead of helping them.
Such acts invite wrath from God.Thousand suicides in Holy Ganga and a thousand years in hell will not wash away that great sin! unfortunately all our Brahmin and uppercaste brothers are indulged in that.
