Need to refrain from prejudice
by rajmohan on Apr 11, 2006 03:17 PM  Permalink

would appreciate the great deal of concern Mr.Ram Kelkar has on the global image and the reputation of India. But then his entire article holds no authenticity as we can see the great deal of inclination he has towards the upper class people when he dismisses the decisions which are meticulously planned planned and executed as arbitrary quota reservation in educational institutions. It is of utmost importance that columnists should always ensure that they portray a real true image of the situation and not flavor the issue with their sentiments and emotions. The soon authors learn this the better it is for both quality as well as the authenticity of entire issue suffers. I sincerely hope takes this feedback in the right spirit and incorporates them in future.

The kind of reservations we witness in India is only one of its type in the whole world, though there are many types of disparities or inequalities present among the comity of nations. Here, the grand children of Mr. Ambedkar, Jagjivan Ram or Paswan or of their type, having their family income in crores, not to speak of lakhs, can get admission in any prestigious govt aided institution with just 40% or 50% marks; while that of a poor brahmin or upper caste person can not get any seat inspite of securing even 80% marks, because there will be no seats for him. And all this in the name of democracy and upliftment of the down trodden. When this kind of anarchy ruled in France, they wiped it out thru a revolution. Depriving or starving living people to day is called correcting historical mistakes, but demolishing a delapidated structure for correcting historical mistake is not allowed. This vote bank politics, resulting from one man one vote, is what is going to determine the future of this country. It is time therefore for ordinary people to wake up and tear down the sinister designs of the cunning politicians who dupe the country thru oil scams, arms deal and lottery scams.

I fully agree with Ram Kelkar. If mr Arjun Singh is so serious about reservations, he should set up an example with resigning from his job in favour of an obc candidate.Next congress and all other parties who are in support of obc reservations should strictly keep party president post only for OBC person. Next reservations should enforced in the parliament, cabinet , army etc. For that matter why not film industry( lead actor or actress should be reserved for OBC & villans can be from higher castes),beauty contests and national honours like padmashree, padmabhusan etc.

reservation in education institutions
by Tanbir on Apr 11, 2006 12:22 PM  Permalink

Increased capacity in IITs or other schools will automatically increase reserved seats wouldn't that solve the issue of promoting education among SC/ST and OBCs.
I was wondering why is that these politicians do not have 50% reservation in the ministerial births too.

I believe we have to be more creative and original in promoting the welfare of the backward classes if we want to succeed.

Be ready for a massive brain drain
by Amit Kumar on Apr 11, 2006 12:20 PM  Permalink

This reservation has done enough to spoil our education system and now this new figure of 49.5 percent (as suggested by HRD) is threatening to cause for another era of massive brain drain. Our aim should be, a better educational structure and scholarship schemes so that the deprived ones get benefited. Arent we pushing the mainstream on margin jus to bring a mere percentage of people to mainstream? Where are we going, an India which Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar dreamed of ? where he hoped one day will come when no such thing called caste will exist. I am sorry to say but we are feeling like being cheated in our own country.

reservation is the worst thing to help anyone
by Alok on Apr 11, 2006 12:11 PM  Permalink

When I was in IIT, I used to wonder why 22.5% reservation exists in IITs. It simply doesn't help the SC/ST in my village, whose parents are toiling whole day to feed their kids in the evening. Can we do something for them? Instead of providing reservation, can we guarantee education for their kids? Can we make them competent enough to hate to come through any reservation? Can we make them a better human being than just giving them a reminder in the name of reservation that they are from backward caste or SC/ST? If a guy can not score 30 out of 300 in JEE and still you want to call him an IITian, it just hurts my emotion. By reserving 22.5% seat government was sending at leat 22% coward candidate into IIT. Most of them had to go through 1-2 years of prepatory course to get into the main stream. Then few had to spend six years to get a diploma? Sometimes not even diploma...huh ...
The bottom line is politicians need to understand the importance of rewarding the right people and they need to find out a way to help those who are in need. Laloo, the greatest MANDAL, destryed the complete education system in Bihar, how did that help anyone, including Yadav? Can anyone answer that?

Reservations over caste/creed/sex is all crap.
by Anand Tandon on Apr 11, 2006 12:10 PM  Permalink

I don't understand what this govt is upto. On one side it talks about economic growth, upliftment of poor etc. on the other hand it talks about reservations for 'special' castes, and on the 3rd side, again talks about making an equal, caste-free India. If the govt. is so much concerned about the backward, 'poor' castes, then what about the general, 'poor' people.
I think the life of a general catergory guy, born poor, is a curse. He has no right to live; and if he wishes to struggle, and survive; these corrupt politicians won't let him live.
Reservations in IITs/IIMs + Relaxed norms + Preparatory courses + Relaxed fees (the only sensible measure, in all this hoopla) + WHAT NEXT??? GUESS their next step.... giving them IIT/IIM degrees 'in advance' (just in case they need some more time to qualify) :-).
Advantage of such reservations are alwyas taken by much affluent guys, who in actual, don't deserve any kind of reservation.
