by Anup Chintawar on Apr 11, 2006 12:01 AM  Permalink

It is crystal clear that this is just for vote bank...so you should not call HRD minister honourable..he is not honourable...he is one of the player of the dirty politics.

We just want a fair system!
by Madhu Jain on Apr 10, 2006 11:45 PM  Permalink

Mr.Kelkar expressed his views very well. I am sure his opinions must be matching with most of the Engineering and management aspirants. I myself graduated from a private engineering school (funded by people who cared more about the constructing cafeterias rather than providing scholarships to top-grade 'n' needy students. However, students with highest academic standing including my batch-mates and me had lot more less privileges for library books, tuition fee reduction and awards. It's all because the engineering school had reservations for OBC/SC/ST and SIKH students! How would you justify that Sikh students are more needy than any other student? An SC student, who drives Mercedes Benz in school and son of an IAS officer, has seat reservations, no matter which Public Service Commission Exam he wants to write! Please value hard work and support fair system, one caste and one religion, which is called humanity.

not again!!
by vijay on Apr 10, 2006 10:49 PM  Permalink

The quota system should be removed alltogether. I don't think we can build a casteless society if we start providing privileges to some sections of society on the basis of class/caste.

The "one year preparatory course" scheme at iits is good as from my personal experience i have found the people that come through that scheme to be good enough to survive in the IIT environment. Similar schemes should be in place at all institutions rather than providing illogical quotas, if the government still wants to stick to its caste-based gradation of society.

Another brain drain in pipeline!!!!!!!
by rk on Apr 10, 2006 10:46 PM  Permalink

The new reservation bill will be a cause for another brain drain. Recently our government is happy that reverse brain drain is happening and this will stop. All the intelligent people will now start concentrating on studying abroad and will start settling down there only, reason being lot of people will either get seats or jobs without putting 1/100th % of effort (thanks to the bill).

Government wants equality in terms of living conditions etc. and this is a good thouht. But, as mentioned in an article before, if the root of education itself is bad and have reservations in higher education, how confident is the govenrment that people who get seats under the quota raj will work hard and increase their living standards?

This new bill is another way to push the country back into the red-tapism and bribery which was on the decline for the past few years.

Mandal Redux revisited
by Ajay on Apr 10, 2006 09:42 PM  Permalink

I am very much for Prakash Y Ambedkar's dream to delete the concept of 'cast' from India. To achieve that I believe the very backward lower cast people should force the lawmakers to delete the word from using. I would suggest that these lower cast people should be spelled out loud and clear as "LOWER CAST" in front of every body as UNTOUCHABLE PEOPLE. In malayalam they are called "pattiyum and poochayum" (dogs and cats) as everybody knows what it is. In most of the time it people take it for granted without a value if they earn some thing they do not deserve(ie. you are giving it for free so i can do whatever i want and i am not accountable for anything attitude).

No reservations please
by Anushika on Apr 10, 2006 09:36 PM  Permalink

I am against Reservations. Our educational system is already too tedious and students getting 95% in HSC too have to go through rigorous efforts to get into medicine or engineering. The whole educational infrastructure right now is based on "Survival of the fittest" and we have to make sure that the minority or SC class are able to be a part of the fittest by raising their primary education and not reserving seats for them.

I would never trust a doctor who was dumb but got into medicine on the basis of reservation. Neither would such engineers do any good for the country.

If they want equality, learn to fight without any tantrums and political strings attached.

Reply to Ram Kelkar
by Ravi on Apr 10, 2006 09:32 PM  Permalink

Mr Kelkar, Its a concidence that even I work in downtown Chicago with a prestigious Investment Bank.
I have gone through your article, however I vehemently oppose the parallel you tried draw between the American and Indian Constitutional Amendments. The reason being that, America is what it is today because of the people. The people who truley beleived in AFFIRMATIVE ACTION in letter and spirit. I was overwhelmed by the way its being implemented even in the Corporate America. You can name any firm the power house of Manhattan, and I can show you that they have a route map and growth plan for the classes that were oppressed for centuries.

We on the contrary, try to implement the reservations grudgingly as a mere formality with condesence. Its easy to blame the political classes for this by saying that they are trying to play vote bank politics. But honestly ask yourself this question, do we as the people of India respect our fellow citizens who have been deprived of their basic right to education for centuries?

You can reach me on 804 241 2485 if you may wish to.

Regards
Ravi

well said
by gajendra on Apr 10, 2006 09:09 PM  Permalink

Sir whatever you have written is correct but the question is what is the solution for this ever ending caste politics. The reservation which was meant for 10 years has been there already for 55 years without any results and is still increasing. All it has done is create a creamy layer amongst these reserved category people and these people are using the reservation time and again.
