to dear mr bhalla
by aman kumar on Oct 26, 2005 12:03 AM  Permalink

Dear Mr. Bhalla,
I don't suppose sensible people read your regular fantasies on the rediff. Otherwise by now someone would have posted the reference for the figure that Sainath has quoted. So, here goes,

Patnaik, U. 2003: Food Stocks and Hunger: The Causes of Agrarian Distress, Social Scientist.

Prof. Patnaik has published her research regarding declining food availability in other issues of Social Scientist as well as EPW. I hope, however, that you count her as an economist -- though I have reasons to fear the obverse. Finally, I trust that you are clever enough to realise that there are gaps in your article (?). But as you indicated, in journalism, especially of the pink variety, anything goes.

With warm regards,
Aman

dont equate press with SC
by Shree on Oct 17, 2005 02:19 PM  Permalink

I would agree about the first line for the SC, but not the press. Saying the press was never biased politically or above politics in any way is wishfull thinking.
Look at TOI. I could write pages about its wrongs just in ethical sense. But then, this is only supposed to a comment...

Journalists politics and representations
by Dharmendra Goel on Oct 16, 2005 09:37 AM  Permalink

PKL. Oct. 16th Sunday 2005.
The journalists suffer the illusion that their
representations could change the world , that refuses
to be changed by stronger forces of history as "needs",
physical transformations of ecology and trade and industry or Wars because they trust that they can morph the beliefs of Historical Agents , and the
journalists twist and mask thorough representations
the reality that moulds "praxis"...they should have known the power of truth and facts better , but alas in hubris they assume they can fool all the people for all the time!D. Goel
